Garmin Cadence sensor magnets
Some where I have lost the crank magnet for my cadence sensor. Before I order a replacement from Garmin which will cost me around $20. Is there a home job or 3rd party magnet I could try that you know of?

I've used the polar crank magnets before and they worked fine.
I dont think it matters.
Yep, hydraulic brake bleeding block and a cheep wheel magnet from the lbs has worked for me for 18 months just fine
Agree - any magnet will do as long as it strong enough for the pick up to detect and create a pulse. To 'proect' my crank arm magnet I get a round one (ex wheel magnet) and put it in the pedal threaded hole, bit of tape over it and adjust the pick up so its close enough - that way the magnet can't get knocked off on rocks and other objects.
You may find your friendly LBS has an odd one lying around

Cheers for the info. I think i may have an old wheel magnet somewhere, if not the ebay item looks interesting. Not sure how it actually attaches to the crank.
Judging by their comment:
"Suitable for any Mountain Bike or racing bike pedal with Steel, Stainless Steel or Cro Moly Axle eg: Shimano, Look, Time, Speedplay, Crank Brothers, Ritchey Etc NB: Not suitable for Titanium Axle Pedals"
It look likes it just sticks to the pedal axle magnetically. Having said that stainless isn't magnetic so I'm not sure if that's a furphy
Depends on the material the pedal axle made of. If steel then magnet works, if titanium (non magnetic) then you may need to wrap electrical tape around the crank to retain it, which is preferable even with steel spindles.
Some wheel magnets are not strong enough to fire the sensor so make sure it works, the light on the Garmin sensor should flash as the magnet passes it. Some wheel magnets are embedded in a holder with a thread on that stops the magnet seating properly - chop off the thread unless you got hollow pedal spindle.
I went to my regular LBS this afternoon for another reason and asked about the magnets before I left. They gave me a small round flat fridge magnet free of charge. (I don't think it came from their fridge). I got home and stuck to the pedal axle no problems (no tape yet). Done a light test before I even attempted to move the sensor back and its working. Don't know if I will worry about moving it back now. The tape might be a good idea just in case.
