Motos destroying jump tracks

SCAMTB's picture

By SCAMTB - Posted on 25 February 2013

Hi all,
Recently a notice was put up at the bottom of one of the jump tracks from Red Hill (see image).
Not sure how long it's been there but around december 2012 i took the other photos of one of three motos getting ready to set off from the Sports Centre. The other two riders were waiting at the bottom of said track where it comes out onto the Parkway but I couldn't get a photo of them.

[Mod. moved to Northern Beaches]

To the left of the pic (out of shot) is where the motos' originally cut a path. The open area to the right was done by a group of young guys in an old Land Rover Discovery. I saw them limping out with the front skirt and bumper hanging off along with two flat tyres.
The gate was installed by Dept. of Lands. Originally unlocked. Locked for a while. Now unlocked again.
Due to this gate and the one onto Lady Penrhyn being left unlocked, people are now accessing and dumping rubbish. The latest being a load of asbestos roofing. Since new residents have moved into one of the homes up there the gate onto Lady Penrhyn has been left permanently unlocked. This has coincided with the increase in illegal (alleged) access.

Cheers

Cheers, thanks for the details. Looks like I might have been given incorrect information re: the damage created to get around the gate? Have asked Burt, who supplied the shots, to respond.

I am bored with this thread - the signs are clear yet the Motos ignore them as stated above in their own posts.
You can see the tracks in the photo and in person if you went to Red Hill.
If the gate has since been opened then naturally there would be no need to traverse around into the bush (on either side) for anyone.
Still doesn't change the simple fact of the signs.

Thats the best news ever Burt you have been proved wrong now disappear and stop causing trouble between motos and MTB. Lets hope we can work together for the intrest of both sports.

See ya Bart! Smiling

That gate is at the top form what I understand?
When we enter Red Hill we go in off the Wakehurst Parkway and we never go up through there anyway!

We always stop and chat to the MTBers and vice versa, not sure why any group would kick up a stink when we can all survive up there together.
Lets face it, if we make too much noise about it and the greenies get a whiff of it they will lock us all out until the area is redeveloped!
So lets chill out, stop threatening to slash peoples tyres and enjoy the area!
Rant over!

I never said anything about slashing tyres.
Secondly you are clearly either thick or plain ignorant to ignore all the signs.
As it is a wet weekend I would put money down that there are motors ripping up red hill. Motos don't contribute in a positive manner, which is how the op began this discussion.

Burt may not have gotten that one detail correct, but it doesn't mean the rest is wrong.

What you guys don't seem to be hearing is this: because of your behaviour (talking as a group here), and the disproportionate levels of damage you do spinning your rear wheels and throwing roost, especially in the wet, you have massive targets on your backs and the land managers want you gone.

Unless you get organised and start using peer pressure and some form of code of conduct to look after the trails you use and mitigate the environmental impacts, as we are in the process of doing, your days of using Red Hill are numbered.

Scoff or troll as much as you like, it's of no consequence to me: it's not my access that will be affected. I'm just trying to be constructive. You can't say we didn't warn you about what is coming your way.

As to the comments about slashing tyres: yes, over the top. I'd be more inclined to use my camera. However, it gives you some idea of depth of feeling towards your user group.

Burt. Your photos is from Cromer road - I agreed and posted we are not allowed in there. The other sign I'm not where it is located. Screw your head on mate. We enter from the parkway, no sign and no gate, it is church land not crown or aboriginal. I don't ride the MTB trails cos you guys go to a huge effort to build it and it looks sick. We were going to ride today - too wet to ride red hill and we cancelled it. Don't paint us all with the same brush. The group I ride with anywhere from 15-20 guys(never more than 3-4 at once) are all rego'd and licensed and we respect the signs and the gates. We ride where the police say we can. We have insurance. Do you? Highly doubtful - life is short mate worry about something important that you can make a difference about - us riding motos at red hill isn't going to change in the short term. Try and smile and stop being a massive knob!

Moto riders have heaps of them-all on the rear tyre which rips the shit out of wet trails!-Cam450 you must remember all it takes is 1 dickhead to have a whole user group shit smeared!(MTB included!) so even though you & your mates try to ride respectfully you have been targeted as noisy, dangerous & bush wreckers who seem to have no respect!-Moto's will have to get their shit together if they want to continue to ride there. My 2 cents worth anyway.

I need to clear something up straight away, i was simply being a keyboard warrior by saying slash their tyres. I would never do it as i would hate it being done to my car. I am more of a car enthusiast than a mtbiker so take my comment very lightly.

Secondly, i dont even live in the area and have never ridden Red Hill, hell i dont even know where it is.

One thing i will say though and this may kick up a stink but moto riders need to remember that spinning wheels is negligent riding and is open to fines and loss of points on your licence. Excessive use of engine rpm is also known by the Police as hooning apparently. It is also a very real possibility that your bike will be confiscated for doing any of the above.

I also ride MTB & moto and used to ride a lot with the old nobmob crew. I stopped reading the forum because of discussions and in particular attitude like this.

I have not been up Red Hill with the dirtbike in a long time nor will I go back there but from my experience the next people to be thrown off the land once the motos are gone are the mountain bikers. It's completely irrelevant if the damage is less than motos, mtb tyres do damage as well and scare the crap out of walkers and horses.

Last point i'd like to make is a moto tyre track does not necessarily always come from a full sized bike. Last time i rode there i saw a bunch of kids with pocket bikes and smaller motocross bikes.

End of rant, I'll now get the Santa Cruz out & go riding.

@ id09s "It is also a very real possibility that your bike will be confiscated for doing any of the above."

Now that's funny!
On the road maybe, but off road? Get a grip!

@ geoz I agree totally mate, unfortunately it will be the mountain bikes that will get booted out next, as they also cause damage and if you haven't noticed bush walkers hate MTBs also.

Lets just get on as a group and keep Red Hill open for everyone to enjoy longer!

Hi Cam

If you enter from Wakehurst Parkway then you are definitely crossing land owned by aboriginal lands and the crown. That is if you follow a circuit on single track or firetrail.

As I have said before we are working with these land owners and have general support for our mountain bike user group from them and green groups. We are currently finalizing details. One of the green group members comments on our proposal was that we weren't asking for enough single track.

When we catch up I will show you the land ownership maps. These have been provided to my by Council.

G'day Simon

I don't want and argument with you or any other MTB riders. I don't mean for my posts to sound that way.

I'm not arguing the land boundaries. Just the placement of the signs. I understand and appreciate it only takes one jerk on a moto or MTB to paint us all as bad. But what I don't understand is the police have said we can legally ride from that entrance and as they are the ones that regulate and enforce the rules they have said we are doing nothing wrong.

Understand your busy but I would like to talk with you about how we can make this work, happy to meet for a beer or coffee to discuss. Also the more I think about it,!if I can get involved in the discussions with the people who we are upsetting, I'd like to try and find a positive outcome.

I have it on good authority that any vehicle registered in NSW is to be driven/ridden in accordance with the NSW road rules so technically riding a moto in the way in which i am sure you would be riding it would be illegal. Would it stand up, its up to the judge and the person representing you i guess, but legally you are committing an offence

Good stuff Cam, pleased to see a proactive approach. A good leader doesnt tell you how its done but shows you how to do it. I hope you can set an example to your peers and get them onboard.
