Havoc vs Mavic on Hope

Hi all,

I've been looking for a new wheelset for a while and have narrowed it down to either: 1) 2012 Easton Havoc UST, or 2) 2013 Mavic EX823 on Hope EVO 2 ....

Both are UST out-of-the-box (a must). The price difference isn't all that great between the two, so that's not really a factor.

I'm a little concerned though, that the Havoc's might be a bit more trouble if/when you need to replace spokes (not as readily available?), and that there were problems reported with bearing preloads from some users (maybe fixed in newer versions) ?.

The Mavics however, are about 700gr(wheelseet) heavier and a bit more expensive. Parts will be easier to source if/when needed and the Hope's already have an XX1 driver body for the rear (1X11 upgrade or next bike)

So - I'm not too sure which way to go ... I'm leaning towards the Mavic/Hope but the price/weight of the Havocs sounds attractive too

Any advice, flames, recommedations on my potenial choices would be greatly appreciated!

Easton Wheels ;-)

I'd go with the Easton Havocs. I had my Easton XC90 (the XC version) wheels for over 2 years and no trouble so far. They are sturdy, well made, seal well, stay true and spin forever. The 29'er wheels are < 1700g (only 100g difference to the EC90 carbon wheels). Despite being only 32 spokes, they stayed true when a 2" stick got into my front wheel and stopped me from 30km/h to 0 km/h in 1 sec...with a subsequent OTB landing. I expected a taco'ed wheel but it is true as ever.
