Upcoming races?!

Hey all,

I missed out on the Capital Punishment as I had a last minute overseas travel.. so now I'm looking for my next race? Would like to do one in the next 2/3 months. Any suggestions?

Would prefer it to be within reasonable travel distance from Sydney, but if it is a great race I could consider traveling further..

Thanks!

and take your pick...

Probably the next biggie near Sydney is the Convict 100. The 100km course is both great riding and a fair sort of challenge, the 50km is a bit blah. The atmosphere at St Albans for both is usually pretty buzzy. And you finish at a pub!

How about the Husky down the south coast? It's meant to be one of the better xc marathons.

I'd do the convict 100 , though its only a few weeks away now, the other good one coming up in September I think is the kowalski in canberra

The convict is a great ride

The Husky is a wet race even in drought. They did say this year the plan to make trails around the wettest parts so it will be interesting what they do.

Is the 50km race really boring, I was thinking about doing it as a first intro into racing. I originally wanted to do the 100km race but don't think I have been riding enough to make the full 100km distance

I've done it a few times, but I'm losing interest.
It starts with about 12 km of country roads and farm tracks. Bit like riding in a road race peleton to start with, but with plenty of folks who aren't used to doing that. After that it heads up up a big mofo fire trail hill. Guns can ride it, but many will walk for a few hundred metres. Then you bounce along the ridge top fire trails for a while. Some ups and downs - the descents are easy enough to ride unless you are going too fast, which people do and they usually send someone home in the ambo or chopper. A few of the climbs will have many riders off the bike for short walks. Then a final big descent from the ridge tops back to the valley - again it can be tricky if you hit it up too fast. Black Flash can testify. Then about 12 kms back into town along a dirt road.
Then you get handed a beer at the finish and go and collapse in the beer garden of the pub.

Why not do the Rocky Trail 4hr at James Estate in two weeks, then the Convict two weekends after 100km or the 50km,(there is no such thing as a "dull race" if you are actually racing - sure the 50km is a dull "MTB ride", but a dull race it could never be) and then have a bit of a break (some Cyclo Cross races on your MTB) before Husky.
Enjoy - there are club XC races, there are the Chocolate Foot races too....so much choice.

I agree with Anthony - a race is what you make of it, and never needs to be dull. I thoroughly enjoyed the 50km Convict last year, and will be back trying to go under 2 hrs this year. For me, that will mean going flat out the whole way, which is anything but dull. Capital Punishment 50 is a much more varied course with loads of singletrack, which makes for plenty of excitement. But I try not to compare races - just set myself goals and enjoy them for what they are.

Great spot, great track, great wine what more could you ask for.
I'm not at the pointy end, best result 3rd in the mixed pairs at 3 ring circus last year.
For me racing is for the fun and to challenge myself. Improve my times from the previous races.
Raced the convict 50km over the last 3 years. This year I decided to race only small single track races, Willo, James Estate, hidden valley classic, singleton 3 hour, 3 ring circus, Dungog again (cancelled), biggest race this year will be the Kowalski again. All single track races this year, much more fun than fire trail and road races.

25-50-75k XC...90% single track ensures an exhilarating ride through an unspoilt wilderness...it's not until September & yep, it's a few hours from Sydney, however, it's well worth the drive...believe me, you won't go home disappointed.

The Paterson 8hr is a good race. It used to be a 24hr but they have shortened it. The tracks are only opened once a year for the race. The tracks there are really nice, big climb to the top and a long descent to the bottom.

We have been scoping the trails in Taree for 2 years now and have chosen the best of them for the Brownie Points Burner. The trails are excellent, the meters descent more than any other race anywhere and its a single loop. More singletrack than Capital and Convict, closer than Thartha, and not as boring as Black Yamma (although that is a fast race).
Oh its a new track - few have ridden before and none yet in all in the one day.
It will be epic hard and epic fun.
