Complete bike or frame and build from OS

Has anyone done the maths on wether to just but the frame in Aus and get al the other parts from overseas i.e Chain Reaction etc.
I do not understand how the LBS can charge an extra $1300 from SLX group set to XT on a complete built when I can get this for all the parts closer to $900 not including wheels, headset. So taking into account the original cost of the SLX group set and then add the extra dollars for the upgrade. Is it worth the extra say $2000 than getting this in OS and getting someone to build it up?
Anyone help or comments appreciated.

Generally it's cheaper to buy a complete bike. The extra $1300 would also encompass better fork, cassette, wheels, handlebar and seatpost in addition to XT gruppo.

Whether this adds up to $1300 I don't know, but buying frame and building up is generally more expensive especially when you add all the little bits and pieces like cables, fork, wheelset, gruppo, headset, spacers, stem, seatpost collar, grips, tyres, saddle.

So you could potentially buy a complete bike and upgrade everything and flog the removed kit off on eBay and come out in front compared to buying the higher spec bike off the peg, but when it comes time to sell in say 18 months to 3 years, if you have an Anthem 2 specced up to Anthem zero level, you still have an Anthem 2 and resale will be correspondingly less.

Hey guys,

Before i worked for a bike store i had no idea of this, and honestly wouldn't have believed it.. but your LBS isn't ripping you off. They just cant compete with wiggle/crc and the like.. Even with staff discount (pretty much cost) i could buy shimano products cheaper from wiggle if i didnt want to keep my business in the local industry ..just a thought

The real problem then is the local distributors taking big margins on the products they sell to retailers.
Obviously scale has a lot to do with it as well. No LBS could possible move the volume that CRC or Wiggle can.

Perhaps our local bike industry needs to get smarter and consolidate their purchasing power through buying groups. If there were a few large groups representing most LBSs in NSW for example. The distributor would have to lower their prices as the balance of power would sit with the buying group.- just a thought

only build a bike when you can't buy what you want. That's only time I've built my own too.

The bike companies have the best buying power of all. When I've added it up you get the frame for free buying a complete bike. On sale sometimes I've seen the whole bike for the price of the fork.
