Hey guys, and ladies,

i have been meaning to get a video camera to video my commute and normal rides, well after friends from townsville were involved in this http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/blog/2013/06/22/serio... and subsequently the lady involved has passed away, it seems a must .... however i dont know which to get??

I was thinking 2 for my GF and myself, but it has to be light and waterproof yet last for about 2 -3 hours and i know the saying "cheap, light weight and good quality ... pick two" applies but would like to not spend an arm and a leg. what does everyone use? i know go pro and contour but i really dont need it to make movies just film at a resonable clarity ...

thanks for your help

Matt

With a quick search I found this HD 720P Waterproof Sports Camera for $64.99. Two observations are, It only has a 54 degree lens which is kind of like tunnel vision and It requires AA batteries, this could end up costing a fortune.

A camera my LBS have been selling is the AEE MagiCamwhich you can pick up for around $199. Its cheaper than a CoPro but is very similar. It is waterproof, can record in HD1080, it has a rechargeable battery and a 170 degree lens which helps capture to the sides. I have not used one of these but this is what I would be leaning towards for a cheaper video camera.

Theres an awesome thread on bicycles.net.au forums that deals with cameras fir just this purpose.

The problem with many cheap so called sports cams is the processing speed is too slow to capture rego plates even in strong light. You need to look at more than resolution claims (1080p etc).

The good news is that some of the 6 dollar ebay key fob spy cams are actually outstanding performers if you know which ones to get.

I run two gopros and have successfully used them on three occasions to request driver training and counselling for bus and truck drivers whose thoughtless actions have put me in danger.

To the credit of the companies involved their response was excellent.
