We checked out the course at Blue Gum over the weekend, and the work we did last year is holding up well. Palletive Care is perfect.

Don't miss this one!

Thinking of bringing the 1x9 dually out for this one, but can't remember (or have blocked out!) how steep the climb is. Am I kidding myself thinking 34/34 gearing will be fine? How do the ss'ers go at Blue Gum?

stephen's picture

I SS it on 32 18 the only real difficult bit is maintaining speed up through the rocky climb section after palative care and a bit of a grind up the grass hill to the transition area, the rest of it I don't miss gears. Go for it, it's probably the best track going for a 1x setup.

Is there's a short techy climb towards the end of the lap which would be pretty hard without the right gearing.
I'm gutted I'm missing this as I've already paid for my entry in the postponed Choc Foot down in Nowra.
Blue Gum is my favorite local xc track by far.
If you havn't ridden it, get yourself there folks!!!

Stephen's comment on SS is based on his great experience. As for me - I need all the gears that are available.

It's a good ride for all. The U13s and Novices ride a modified course which does not include Paleltive Care and the the techy climbs.

I read @gazza's comment. If he says it's the bomb then I've gotta try it!

Does anyone know how long a lap is or a garmin map of the course?

Fatboy's picture

It's 40km a lap and we do 5 of them Smiling. See you there Wade.

So was your name in the Book of Life? What did St Peter have to say? Eye-wink

stephen's picture

Not in the book of life but my awesome single speed wisdom was called upon and I delivered what i think was encouragement. Hopefully i'll get to meet St Peter one day long from now and have a chat!

Lap lengths are about 4km. So total race lengths are similar to what you do at Yellomundee.

However, the course packs in more "fun" per km - no cruisey bits!

See you there.

Damn knee , I am off the bike indefinitely, rode Thursday night and lasted about 5 km till my knee went out, so its lots of physio for me and hope to be ready for the scott 24 hour. was looking forward to riding blue gum lodge Sad

Fatboy's picture

I'm out too. Just got back from a ride and noticed a slight wobble in my rear wheel. Turns out the whole rim has split. Looks like it copped a whack on the side which I assume happened on the plane coming back from Melbourne. It's a 29" and all my spares are 26" ... Not enough time before tomorrow to sort out a replacement.

@craked - there's a physio at Penrith that Gordo has just booked me into. Swears by him and drives nearly 2hrs to get to him. He is also a cyclist/ mountain biker and does bike fitting so knows all about our injuries etc. I figure with all the times Gordo has nearly killed himself he would know a good physio. pm me if you want the details.

Thanks WSMTB - Great day, fantastic track and good racing. I had a hoot out there! I hope everyone else did too.

Such a great XC racecourse and a well run event to test cycling abilities in all forms. A great WSMTB event; gotta make those races more of a priority!

GAZZA's picture

Gutted I missed it today!

Thanks for the feedback all - it was a great race (although my ribs are still sore from meeting a rock).

Try not to miss the 12 Hour on 10 Aug. After that its our XC Round 7 on 22 Sept - presently at Yellomundee, but you never know..........
