If you are only riding the Whakarewarewa Forest trails and staying in town, you won't need a car. It is only a short ride to either end.
If you want to go further afield, Rent-a-Dent are good value if you don't want the latest. Cars are still good.

We stayed in a motel very close to the trails at Redwoods. But to be fair, just about anywhere in town will fit that description.

You can get a shuttle into town from the airport (Google it - I think you have to book), so if you don't plan on riding anywhere but Redwoods (which is plenty to keep you occupied all week - least, it was the twice I've been) then perhaps you can avoid the expense of car hire?

Will be staying in Turangi for the duration

So you're staying 90 mins away from Rotorua?

Wow! You're keen!

FWIW I found it better to ride 2-3 hours in the morning, eat, rest then repeat for the afternoon. I wouldn't fancy adding an additional 3 hours of driving on top of that.

Can you not stay in town? The Aywon or Alpin motels are cheap and cheerful and has been mentioned are close to one of the riding areas (but a decent 30+ minute walk into the centre of Rotorua).

Just get one of those campervans and stay wherever you want Smiling
