Bike transport options with Hire Car

Getting down to planning for my first MTB race travel/holiday event at the Cape to Cape. I'm flying to Perth then hiring a car to drive to Margaret River and would like to know if anyone has had any experience with travelling in a hire car with bike? I am assuming the boxed bike will fit in the back (have hired RAV 4 or similar) for the trip down from the airport but will need to get from accommodation to start and back each day plus would love to keep the bike assembled for the few days we plan to spend exploring the region after the race to sneak in some more riding.

Do any of the hire car companies or third parties hire bike racks or roof racks? Any other ideas?

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks.

Thats the way I do it when the missus has the Shaggin Wagon and I have to use the backup.

Why don't you want to remove the wheels, takes all of 60sec even if you have bolt ons.

Hi - the key is really the case. As said by others, getting a bike in a car is easy. Its the box as well.
Two options - get a big enough car for the bike and the box to in without having to pack it up everytime.
Or - get a soft bike bag (i.e. one without structure) that can be squashed into the car.

The final think you might tihnk of would be to call one of the many excellent Perth bike shops, and arrange with then to collect a carboard box for your return trip.
that way, you could land in Perth (bike packed in a card board box from local 'home' store), build the bike at the airport quickly, and leave the box in the waste there.
do your Cape to Cape trip, and on the final day, swing by a local store, get fresh bike box, and pack it up.
Most bike shops will save you one for the price of a box of donuts, or a donation to a local cycling charity etc.

See you at Cape to Cape - I just booked my acccom this afternoon. Cant wait.

In the rental car with two large size Fuel EXs. Front wheels off and back seats down.

There was an unexpected rain shower near the end of our ride. Awesome fun! The tourist mags came in handy for keeping some of it out of the car.
Thought the pic might give you an idea of size. 2011 model Rav4.
