Tyres

Any idea on tyres for trails around Sydney. I've been running Nobby Nick's but I am absolutely destroying the sidewalls way before the treads wear down. Probably due to my riding but if there's anyone out there who has had the same trouble and have found an alternative would be keen on knowing.

[Mod. moved to Northern Beaches as query is specific to local trails]

I ride NN's and was destroying the sidewalls on them too until I changed to the Snake Skin version. They are much better and will outlast the tread!! I destroyed the OEM NN's on my bike in about 3 weeks by cutting up the sidewalls but I've had no issues with the tougher sidewalls.

I've just changed my front tyre to a Hans Dampf to see how that goes but I haven't ridden it yet. I do like the NN (I still have a spare new one to put on) but I though I'd try something different.

LUST ignitor front 2.35 and either crossmark or larsen rear 2.1. I wrecked my NN OEM's after two rides

is heavy but sticks like snot to a hanky. I *really* liked it on front on the Trigger I test rode.

I've used NNs and RaRas in 26" and its a good combination but for Sydney trails I'd be wanting at least the full UST version if not snakeskin. I got good life out of them in UST and the tread was shot well before the sidewall gave up.

I have the TLR version of the RaRa on my 29er but haven't really done decent kms on that yet due to one setback or another over the last couple of months but I'd expext them to be early casualties. I might pull em off and save them for racing.

Don't know if the ignitor is available in 2.35 for 29ers but its a damn good tyre in that width on a 26er. I wouldn't bother with the 2.1 - much too skinny.

I weigh 124kg rtr.

I ride a 160mm bike pretty aggressively on trails like Red Hill, Ya Mum, Oxford Falls (before it became a slope style course), Mona Vale DH, Ourimbah and Stromlo.

I need toughness and longevity over utter efficiency. I also need dual ply sidewalls. Single is either too squirmy or without sensitivity at higher pressure. Pressures tend to be around 36R 32F.

Front is a 2.4 Maxxis Ardent and rear is a 2.25 Crossmark. Both are tubeless.

Neither have given me issues when it comes to punctures, burping, squirming at low pressures etc. I'm very happy with the Crossmark however the Ardent has (for me) a small area between the middle row and side knobs where there is less coverage and therefore I've had a couple of minor front end slides.

Luckily I have 3 interchangeable front wheels so I will also run a DHF 2.5 Minion or 2.5 High Roller for tougher tracks. Having said that, the Ardent has been very good.

Thanks guys - enough for me to go on.

You riding tubeless? Tubeless have a thicker sidewall, plus all the other benefits that tubeless will bring to your riding. If you are not riding tubeless, this will help massively.

Ardents my favourite tyre for the north shore, on the 29er, all mountain hard tail.

Run standard Ardents tubeless on Stan's flow rims.

Never had a problem. 2.4/2.25 front, 2.25 rear.

The thing with Ardents is they don't have any intermediate lugs, so onced leaned they will side abit until the outside lugs pick up. Never had a front tyre slide out on me. Don't be scared to lean them over.
Just takes a bit to get use to.
