Husky 100km - Mud - Anyone have a view?

Hi Folks,

I am thinking of doing the Husky but a mate who has done it before says that he thinks that "the bog holes will still be there but the rest will be dry and sandy". I am looking for a second opinion as I have not done the course before, and while keen, I don't want to trash the bike with mud just before the Highland Fling.

Anyone have a view?

You best to stick to the road.

There's more than a few of us who rebel a bit at the prospect of destroying up to a couple of $k's worth of gear in a a single ride.

Plus there's the impact on trails that I'm uncomfortable with ... unless the promoter repairs the trail immediately post race. Leaving it trashed for a whole year until just just before the next event doesn't seem right to me. Thats if they bother at all.

They were talking about rerouting around the bog holes

... but in the 50, the big bog holes of the first couple of years were largely detoured around last year.
It was still damp last year, but most of the muddy sections were on fire trails, so the damage issue was minimal and they will be dry at the moment. The sniggle is mostly sandy and holds up pretty well even with some rain.
However, there has been very little rain in recent months (just read the Chocolate Foot review of the Coondoo Singletrack Mind round and it spoke of dust!) and the forecast is pretty benign, so I'm not anticipating much mud or water on the 50 course this year. Unlike the Fling, where there is always water to contend with..... only the depth varies.... Smiling

the organisers to check if the re-routing has happened.

Thanks for the intelligent feedback. It appears your profile photo is a fair reflection of you Smiling

We originally looked at rerouting a fair bit of the course due to the bog holes.

Our intention is to still reroute some of the course, but only around what were the worst of the boggy sections. Yesterday I talked to the trails coordinator from the local MTB club down there and he said it's the driest conditions that we have had in 5 years (longer than the Husky has been going for). I would expect a few wet patches to remain in places, however at this stage I would also expect them to be completely avoidable with dry lines around the outsides of them.

All of this is of course dependent on the weather conditions of the next few weeks, which at this stage are looking very favorable.

Sounds like pretty good trail conditions down there

I'm not sure exactly how it is that one wet/boggy/sandy ride is able to destroy $'000s in drive train. Truly I can't see it. I've been one to leave bikes unmaintained for months riding in mud, sand etc and not even managed to wear out a set of pads, let alone a cassette, chain, chainrings, brake disks, pads, jockey wheels and nix......

I'm at well over 1000 km on the chain that came on my second hand dually, and it wasn't a new chain when I bought the bike....... still measures at less than 1/16" per foot stretch.

I must generate super low watts, or I just don't do enough miles or something.

Yeah, there might be a bit of exaggeration there but we get the gist of it. The first 2010 Capital Punishment takes the cake for eating bikes, there were a few people I know of who hit the $1,000 repair mark on that one but it was a worst case example.

I have a 100k entry if your keen

nah.. it's just an excuse not to ride in those horrid conditions.. Im told that my bike will melt if I ride it in the mud?

I did ride some K's along a beach once and did end up doing some damage to the wheel bearings.

Done a 50 and 100 in the mud down there..not keen to do that again, but it does look to be shaping up to be the best Husky yet.

Someone (was it Logan?) mentioned a high damage bill on a wet training ride on GNR awhile back... XTR or X0 brakes destroyed with pads worn thru into pistons, complete transmission destroyed, RD wrecked, cables etc chucked, wheel bearings destroyed and suspension bearings shot. Basically replaced all moving parts bar shifters fork/shock, headset and FD.

Yeah that's a bit extreme but rings, chain, cassette, BB ,cable and outers, pads + rotors (at best) or calipers (quite commonly) still adds up to an expensive day when I have no chance of winning the sheep station.

Hopefully it will be dry for those brave enough to enter.

Always a good call... not me, was someone else Eye-wink

I call either cow pie or malaka! but that's just my opinion.

Well it was definitely on here so exercising your search-fu will turn it up.

Edit: found it. It was fatboy. Towards the end of this thread: http://nobmob.com/node/20709

So ... Sticking out tongue Eye-wink

You joining us on Sunday? Smiling

First Capital punishment cost me new brake pads, chainrings, cassette, chain, bottom bracket, headset jockey wheels and gear cables..... and I only got as far as the first water stop !

Still, I'm planning to do the Husky 100....

It was pretty bad, new pads, cables, pistons were locked solid on the discs...I broke my wrist as well, so that made it worth it.

No joke,
I recon the first wet Husky I did cost me around $350 not including entry!

Slowpup's picture

not cow pie then.

Does anyone know about how much elevation gain or loss there is for the 100 course? I know it's not a ton, just want a good estimate. 400 meters? More? Less?

So I woke up this morning sicker than a dog and think it might be food poisoning. I know it's super short notice but if anyone wants my 100 k entry let me know ASAP. I'm super bummed as I've been training heaps and really really wanted to race. Sad
