Went for a quick ride today at the Dam to check the race bike was ok ahead of the fling.

Lap 1 went well, 30:xx mins (including a bit of traffic).

Lap 2 was going well ... Until - the second creek crossing! Warning - there is a tree down on the left of the track, I cut it a bit close, the branches whipped my bars around. 11 stitches in my chin, 3 large grazes on my arm, and 1 front wheel so bent it won't turn within the forks! Walked the bike to Allambie heights and got home from there.

Thanks ... To the guy in the Agogo 29er hard tail who stopped to help. Also to the 4 downhill riders in the White Hyundai Van at Allambie who stopped and gave me a lift home to manly vale.

I love the way every mountain biker you see has genuine concern for other riders out there - thanks guys!!

So, on the hunt for a 29er rim (or a whole wheel running a 15mm hub) - would consider a full wheel set with a 12x142 rear - upgrades, always an upside Eye-wink

Drop your wonky wheel off to Aido at Belrose Bikes. He's pretty good with wheel work.

You'd be surprised what you can recover. I had a similarly warped front after I put my foot through the rim awhile back after tumbling off an elevated bridge.

Loosening the spokes, placing the warped bit over a large lump of wood, and standing with my full weight at 10 and 2 to get the rim close enough to straight, and then re-tensioning the spokes in an old roadie fork (with an adapter) to go the rest of the way took me about an hour, got the wheel to within a less than a millimetre of true, and with reasonably even tension.

I just had to keep adding height to the wood pile until it looked straight enough. Smiling

I was surprised how tough this particular brand of rim was, but very happy with the result.

... Relatively ok.

I was the guy on the Agogo who made the very poor assessment of you needing "maybe one or two stitches".

I am glad that u were able to get a lift home. I felt bad that I had no car or phone to be able to do anymore! Good work by the downhill crew.

That was one tacoed wheel. Personally I think that it is good excuse for a new wheelset. Just in time for the Fling Smiling BTW I'm doing the 50km so I hope yr training won't be too interrupted.

Cheers mate, I think i will be off the mountain bike for a week, but hopefully can get out on the roadie to keep the legs warm! I'm doing the 100km, but probably not quite as quickly as I was planning!

Just emailed Greg at TWE to see what he can do as I hear he has a great reputation. If not, Stans Crests seem a pretty common option at a good price.

I always used to carry my phone but stopped a few months back, guess I should get back into the habit!

I had a wheel go (freehub went) 2 weeks before the Fling and Greg at TWE got me the new wheel in 24 hours so that I didn't disrupt my training as well as fixing the old one up. This month he's moving location so you better check where he is before you go on a visit. And don't ask him about Real Estate people or you'll see why he is one of the more colourful people in the industry.
