Drivetrain maintenance

My bikes getting on a bit now and is getting a bit "loose".

I do maintain my own bike. Every 2-3 rides i take my cassette off and chain along with chain rings and give them a solid clean, i lube the chain every ride and all that yadayadayadaa....

I haven't done gear cables and outters on my bike yet and its probably due for it so my question is how hard are gear cables to do? What tools do i need and what cables must i go for, any tips or tricks.

Thanks fellas.

Jono.

Just use the existing outers as your template for the new sections.

I replace the outers much more frequently than the cables. Cables can be wiped but once you get crud in there it don't come out of the outers.

A good cable cutter is a worthwhile investment for a clean cut. Pliers or side cutters tend to chew things up.

I always find it best to buy good quality cables as they'll save you hassles in the long run. As Hawkeye said a good cable cutter goes a long way. I personally superglue the end of the inners after cutting rather than use the little crimps. I find it easier when it comes to maintance as the ends of the cables don't become frayed.

Superglue, of course. I'm going home to do that right now, forever getting frayed cables.
