Carbon or Ti seatpost?

I've got a mate whose deciding between a carbon or ti seatpost for a new steel hardtail (http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/soul). Any advice, recommendations or tips for young players? What about longevity of carbon? I've always used Thomson aluminium, so don't know how to advise him.

I think that Titanium will look out of place on a painted steel frame and perhaps heavier than whats available in carbon.

Pricey, but very worth it on a HT - as long as there is enough exposed seatpost to allow it to work well Smiling

Definitely worth looking into!

....I used a hardtail 29er for an 8 day stage race in South Africa last year and the Syntace P6 Carbon Hi-Flex was the best thing I bought for the race. The difference it makes is significant, and to be honest is something that anyone on a roadbike should seriously look at investing in as well (especially if in Sydney given the crap road quality). In terms of quality, how many manufacturers offer a 10 year warranty??? Here are two of the reviews that I based my decision on.

I am going with a comfy Ti post on my new Cotic Solaris.

I have always run Thomson aluminium but a Ti post I imagine will be a lot more comfortable on a steel hard tail.

put one on a vert stiff hardtail, Giant XTC comp and it has been a god send, money well spent

I hadn't thought of Syntace. I've got their 142x12 axle on one bike. They seem to make seriously well thought out and not quite conventional stuff. Funny, I posted the same question on the singletrackworld forum and most answers were saying, go Ti. Thanks all.

Just swapped my Thomson for a Moots ti frame on my cross bike; A tremendous difference. I've also been riding a ti setback on my single speed, again a big fan. Something to consider for me is also resale value. In my experience, a ti post will keep its value far longer.

As mentioned carbon flexes takes some getting used to feels like the tyre pressure is dropping for the first couple of rides.
