MTB research at University of newcastle
Hi all, the sport science department of the University of Newcastle is currently putting together a series of research studies that will take place over the next year or two.
We are looking for well-trained male cross-country cyclists aged 18-35 to participate in these studies.
EDIT: well-trained meaning elite/A-grade or expert/b-grade or training around 10+ hours per week
The first of these studies will only require one session of cycling on a cycle ergometer lasting 45min - 1 hour. This can be done either in Newcastle or Central Coast at a time that suits you.
If you are interested, please contact me through the forum or at [email protected]
EDIT: If you do not quite meet the requirements above but would like to be involved in some sport science research, please feel free to send me an email with your name, age and current and previous training status i.e. hours or kms per week and we may look at creating some studies to suit.

What about a 46 year-old who thinks he's still 25?
How "well trained" are we talking here?
Are we talking 'pro' level or is an enthusiastic but average amateur acceptable?
I think you should include the over 50's since we have an ageing (by all reports) population!
Hi guys, thanks for your responses,
Sorry about the age and training restrictions on these particular studies. It is purely in the interest of obtaining data that is valid and publishable.
For example, if we are looking to gain a realistic understanding of the physiological requirements of XC mountain bike racing, it would not be a valid study if we made the requirements very broad. Scientific journals would be unlikely to publish the paper. e.g. if we study a group of 20 mountain bikers and some are aged 18-35 and some are aged 40-50+, many of the physiological variables that we measure such as heart rate, VO2, muscle activation, power output etc will vary widely purely due to the age difference and so our averages will be way off.
For these particular studies we are looking for well-trained cyclists, basically guys who would be racing in elite/A-grade or expert/b-grade or training around 10+ hours per week.
HOWEVER, if you aren't quite at this level or are a more recreational level rider and you would like to be involved in some sport science research studies, please send through some info with your name, age and current and previous training details i.e. hours/kms per week. If there is a lot of interest from people outside of the age and training requirements, we may look at putting together some studies to suit those that are interested. For the first and last studies of this particular series we would probably look at recruiting some more recreational level XC cyclists anyway (myself included) so please feel free to send me an email at [email protected] and let me know if you are interested.
