Absa Cape Epic - Stage 4 Highlights (& lows)
Looked like a beautiful stage today. But... unfortunately not for Sydney locals SXC Racing
If you've been following their progress, the guys have been riding strong in some hideous conditions. They were top 20 in category GC starting yesterday.
Sadly though, Brian had a big crash on stage 4. He was taken from the course by 4WD with a nasty arm injury. The news is that Wayne waited for medics then carried on to finish the stage, but I don't see this on the results. Apparently Brian's arm was first suspected to be broken, but isn't. So that's the good news. Still sounds quite serious with surgery required though. Ouch!
Get well soon Brian. And good luck with the rest of the race Wayne!

Hope the recovery goes well Brian. I suppose it's too early to say whether it means you have to go back for another go next year??
Hope the surgery goes well! Having to pull out at this stage would be the hardest thing particularly after the months of preparation and anticipation. wishing Wayne the best as he completes it (I believe now as an “outcast“...). Hope Brian recovers well as there are plenty of races back here he can prove the training wasn't worthless!
After all that prep and training to have a crash and have to pull out. Thoughts are with you Brian. And Wayne, keep it up - didn't realise you could continue solo. Learn something every day.
Gutted for 'our boys'. Bring it home Wayne!
To follow up with some better news: Looks like Brian is out of surgery after having a stone about the size of your thumb nail removed from his elbow joint. Ouch!
I've seen the doctor after surgery and he said there was a lot of dirt in there. They've cleaned it and patched me back up and I've just checked out of the hospital and arrived back at the hotel where Wayne is.
I'll post a pic of one of the rocks they removed to keep as momento but unfortunately I don't think customs would be happy with me bringing it in
Obviously TIC
Sorry to hear about your off, hope the spirits are as high as they can be given the circumstances and that what you have achieved makes you a stronger rider.
PS Customs will be fine, just declare it. It would help if it was in a specimen jar.
Sorry to hear about your crash, but glad to hear you're OK. You'll have a special connection to South Africa now
I've just added a pic to the blog of one of the pieces they removed in surgery
Jeepers that's a serious bit of gravel. Glad to hear you've been patched up and I hope you recover well.
Look forward to catching up when you're back.
... did it take to sew up the hole that that came out of???
I'm not sure how many stitches there are. The bandage is big enough (pic just added) and I'm sure the scar will go nicely with the one from the GNR I have
... to risk getting another one at the Convict???
I have the otway the week before that
