... until it's available in XT and lower before the price comes down.
So maybe I've misunderstood something - but how is this an improvement over what is available now? Maybe other than making it less hassle to obtain.
This new Shimano 11spd XTR has an 11x40 spread. (11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40)
Two (or 1 or 3) front rings, 34x24 lowest combo.
Proprietry 70 degree BCD spider so no other make of rings will fit till someone decides to produce them. (Good on em for not just going 1x11)
So how is this an improvement on what's available and I am using now?
10 spd cassette with 11x40 spread (11-12-14-16-18-21-25-29-34-40) (can be up to 42)
2 front rings, 36x20 combo, (or 40x30x20 if I use 3x10 and my 2x10 derailleurs)
non-propriety BCD so can use many different makes of front rings.
One can build a 10spd Shimano based cassette with 11-13-15-17-19-23-27-31-36-42 (or SRAM with slightly different gears) and a 36x20 (or up to 40x26) front rings providing a greater gear range than this XTR set, and is cheaper.
Puzzled.
it goes to 11....

Product development make a product to solve a problem that the consumer isn't aware of
Marketings job is to make sure the consumer is educated about the problem .
9s, 10s 11s, shadow , dual release, multi shift, clutch 3x, 2x, 1x , STIFFNESS!, weight it goes on and on.....
It really makes me laugh!
If you use Sheldon gear ratio calculator and put the sprocket ratio, you can have closer and higher gear for 1x11 than 1x10. Personally i don't have 1x11 system but all the mates who had it love it except the price tag! However I would go 1x10 for my next bike.
Lol! dangersean. A personal favourite.
As for the XTR...there's always someone who can't live without this stuff. Just look at Nigel's guitar collection.
The worst thing about 1x11 sram is the $450 cassettes. I replaced everything on my bike for $440 to convert it to 1x10, only thing I kept was the crank and I bought a narrow wide chain ring for it. It runs the11-36 shimano 10 speed cassette, so all I miss is the 40 compared to shimano 1x11. If I get a hilly course I can always just put a smaller chain ring in the front.
Gotta lurve being on the bleeding edge
For the bargain shopper , current pricing is around $270 a cassette plus shipping, and $45 per chain plus shipping. Still not cheap, but a whole lot better than RRP min Australia
Where do you get cassettes for that price?
Where?
