Baby on bike

Folks,
has anyone ever tried to put a 17months boy on a bike ? and which bike ?
Mine is really into wheels and I wanted him to learn the balance... I've read positive feedback on striders but not sure if they are the best/safety for them.
Cheers

The Hotwalk is awesome. It's a balance bike but is a proper aluminum bike with 10" wheels running tubes etc. It's much lighter than other balance bikes. I got my 2 year old girl one and at 4 she's got at least another 6 months on it. We rode the Bay Ride a few weekends ago; 7ks with a stop at a park 1/2 way and it was no problem. Also regularly do the Narrabeen Lakes trail from middle creek up to the park and back.

Price is ok as well at under $200.

I bought my 2 year old a Giant Pre, she loves it and completely gets how to lean it.

It's aluminum, light, has bearings everywhere and is very well made (and not that expensive).

I have since purchased her a Byk e250 and she still prefers the balance bike! She can ride the Byk unassisted by pedaling and never needed the training wheels so the 'balance bike' theory does work. The only drama I now have is because the balance bike has no brakes, she constantly puts her feet down to stop. The Byk has both back pedal brakes and a front cable brake but she will not use them, prefers to put her feet down and now she always gets mixed up with the pedals when stopping.

Thanks guys!

I will explore the giant pre for its price because hotwalk and strider are both fine but pricey for a kid bike. I saw the strider in Clarence cyclery yesterday... 200$.
But I am happy to hear the balance concept does work

Yeah but that's Clarence St Cyclery. Retail plus 20% there (at least for things like Shimano mtb cleats, pumps, shoes, and other hardware when I've gone to buy stuff).

Suburban shops will have more realistic pricing.

yeah I know but I went there to buy a spare RD hanger (I have a trek) and surprisingly they were way cheaper than what I found on the web

Must have been a mistake Eye-wink

I don't think I could go past a $30 Kmart balance bike I'm not sure how much the weight difference would be and how it would impact on a very young kid. At that price I wouldn't be worried about anything breaking and I highly doubt anything would.

I'm pretty sure you could even replace/customise the stem, handle bar, seat post and seat.

Finally got a strider ex-demo for 100AUD. A bit expensive but I couldn't resist Smiling Will see if Max likes it.
