Google magicshine. I personally dont have any experience with them but many forumites use them and only have good things to say (all things considered).
Jono.
... make's your choice.
At the cheap end of the market there's the 'Magic-shine' and derivatives, like this currently on sale at T7 for 60 bucks:

This looks a little more refined (lighter weight):

Don't forget to get a cheap-ass tail light too.
P.S. Had a quick glance at Wiggle & CRC as didn't check lighting for a while. Sorry, but nothing jumped out. There are lots of other options from the more 'exotic' brands but sadly they wouldn't come in within your budget.
The guy who used to do magic shine now runs http://www.mtbrevolution.com/
Great products (I have two of his Xeccon lights - one is used daily and is very bright and durable).
Also the best customer service I've ever come across on the web

Cheers Guys,
I'll be sure to check those sites out!
Out of interest do any of you currently ride trails at night? and If so how do you find the exp?
+1 for MTB revolution> Night riding is awesome!
hey I have just gone through the whole ordeal or researching to find good cheap lights and I now ride about once a week at night all off road single tracks etc and I ending up spending $300 in total
though I did buy 2 lights one for the handle bar and one for the head I spent $100 on my handle bar light which is great and last about 3 or more hours on full high beam, I decided to fork out $200 for my head light as its much lighter and didnt want extra weight on the helmet ... but you could use the $100 light on the helmet and handle bars ....
here is the $100 light

and here is the $200 light

both lights are great you can ride super fast single trails no worries no issues with not seeing things Aplus from me
There's been a long discussion on Rotorburn about the Solarstorm lights on Ebay

For that price might be worth trying. I'm looking at getting a set myself
I don't know what these lights are like but the price is good and with it being Cell Bikes, you should be able to return them easily if they're dodgy.

From accounts of mates with them, they're not bad at all.
I purchased and have been using for around 3 months two solar storm lights. Purchased four sets at once, two for myself, two for my mate. One runs on the helmet, the other on the bars. We do regular night rides at least 3 a week of around 2 hours in length and so far cannot fault them. I did a lot of research on mtbr.com and other places before deciding that for the price of 40aud each, they were a good gamble.
We did purchase some additional lenses so that we can play with the throw of the beam but so far haven't needed to. With both on high beam you can comfortably ride at 30 - 40km and hour on dirt trail and see 50 - 100 meters ahead.
The only risky part in my mind is with the batteries and for that again through research i intend to purchase replacements from http://www.mtbrevolution.com/. At 38+ aud for a compatible battery using decent cells the whole set will come in under 80 aud. Pretty respectable. According to posts on mtbr forums the batteries from http://www.mtbrevolution.com/ are very reliable.
