Interesting vid from a german road bike site. Apparently the UCI is set to legalise discs for road racing in 2016, so all the roadies are madly checking out what it all means.

This is a worst-case test, where they load a road bike up with 200k of weight including rider. I'm not sure about the rotor size, my deutsch is long since forgotten, perhaps the native speakers on this site might be able to help, but comment from the site I picked this up from seems to indicate they are only 140s.

The interesting bit is about a minute from the end.

Yeah, I bet they wouldn't run that test on new carbon rims! The penalty of failure on a front rim is huge, whereas you can test it safely on rotors.

140 does seem a little small to me when you think of the length of descents possible in the alps etc - hell, a 200mm front starts squeeling and bitching on a 300m descent on the Mtb (@15%)

Cool vid. My german is also long lost.

Carbon (or the resin specifically) hates being heated up. Without the high temps, carbon wheels can use a different resin, be made stronger and lighter and last much longer. Thats why carbon MTB rims actually make more sense than carbon road rims.

200kg is also a very worst case scenario, considering a pro road sprinter should come in well under 80kg with a bike 8kg max. 90% of riders should have total weight of 70-80kg including bike and gear.
