Mtb overnighter

By Carlgroover - Posted on 14 April 2008

When:
Saturday, 24 May, 2008 - 08:54
Duration:
29 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Meeting Point:

Woodford railway station on the south side

Railway parade Woodford NSW
Details:

The plan, park at Woodford station take the train to Wentworth Falls, ride Andersons and have a break for some early lunch before doing up to 3 hrs of really good single track/fire roads in the Hazelbrook/Lawson area, the folk that did the mid Mountain tour are familiar with this area, but We will be doing the improved loop that I've been riding with sweet flowing single track, water bars and some technical up and down (for Liam). Then back to the cars and drive to the camping spot (no fees type) with drop toilet. As I mentioned earlier this spot has an awesome fire place and I will arrange the firewood and bring a gas barbie to cook dinner.
If your not fond of alcohol you could bring your lights and do a night ride.
Sunday morning pack up, slip over to Linden and ride Linden ridge road (fire road) and Dawes ridge single track that seems mostly downhill in both directions, this track is nice mildly technical, quite fast and a bit over grown eye wear strongly recommended and long sleeves if your soft.
The start time can be decided closer to the date and to suit the majority.
John the Diplomat Eye-wink

Update: Just thought I'd mention here, we'll catch the 8:54 train from Woodford, BYO food and drink as we'll be having a BBQ dinner at the campsite. Any one wishing to do Sunday only I will pm you the info to meet us on request. Remember to pack the woolies as it could be a bit cool away from the fire.

...but more to the point - no rain! I can deal with the cold, but wet and cold is just not my idea of a good time.

13-15 degrees should be perfect riding weather.

leopafe's picture

Hey John, is that still the plan???

If it is, I'll already be on the train and then I'll ride Andos with you guys, but I'll probably miss the single track stuff and do the Oaks instead due to time limit imposed by significant other.

Cheers,

Leo.

Mid mountains 6-18C, early fog then sunny, we send all our real cold air down to Penrith they are expected to get 3 degrees on Sunday. Yes the plan is, on the 8:54 train to Wentworth falls.
John.

The temperature? or the three layers seperating my curvy butt and the cold hard ground that includes my lycra G string a latex air bed and a thin strip of polyester tarp, oh and don't forget the ropes Eye-wink

I've just packed 30 litres of water but that works out at 2 litres each so bring a bit each and all will be good.
1 sleep to go!

anke13's picture

Bringing along paper plates, plastic knives and forks and serviettes for BBQ. Will also pack Ketch-up etc.

Gotta take my son to a soccer match on Sat morning - so I'll catch up with you guys AFTER the Ando's ride at Woodford station (around 11-11:30 am).

(Thanks for sending the meet-up details, John).

If anyone needs a ride from Sydney (instead of driving 15 cars to the BM), I have room for up to 3 more people in the Tarago and up to 3 more bikes on the trailer bike rack.

I'll be leaving from Chatswood area ~ 9:30 AM to arrive at Woodford 11'ish. Staying overnight - please bring your own tent/gear.

Contact me if interested - my mobile number is in my profile.

Absolutely fantastic day guys and girls. Thanks to John for organising and playing tour guide again. Last time I rode those trails I was quite the noob so this time round it was a hoot!

Highlight for me had to be when Nate, Greg, myself and one other all outbraked ourselves going down to the creek at Andersons much to the amusement of the people behind, seeing 4 long skid marks off the hairpin heading into the bushes Smiling

What a great weekend, thanks to everyone who made this a very memorable weekend of great riding and great company. The campfire kept the chill at bay on a perfect still clear night, I think everyone is looking forward to the MTB overnighter part 2. Smiling
John.

perfect weekend! thanks everyone.

Anderson's wasn't the only place skidmarks were to be found this weekend, was it Gazza? Come on Greg-get this morning's photo up!

John - top job this weekend. What an introduction to some brilliant trails, especially Saturday arvo. And great company everyone else who was there-thanks for making this one of the best mtb events I've done..

you bastard!!!!!!!

Thanks to all for coming along and enjoying the day, and the good organisational work from the host-est with the most-est, Carlgroover. And thanks too for leading the way Craig.

Although I only rode on the Saturday, the trails were fantastic, especially the single trail. No major bike failures, so we kept up a fairly cracking pace for a large group of 16 riders. John, another ride through the best selected single track is a requirement. Tee it up when you can mate.

Lozza, you knew you could not get away with this. For the information of all and sundry, Lozza had a blonde moment getting on the train at Woodford and realised (too late!!) that he had left his backpack on the station. Not a big deal as it turned out. But is that not like leaving your bike on the station? Sitting on the train thinking that somehow, there is something missing here, but I just can't quite put my finger on it. So now whenever we go riding and are just setting off and you hear the group call out "hey Lozza, have you got your bag?", now you know what we mean.

He he! Laughing out loud

lozza6's picture

hehe, too right. What a stupid thing to do....

As the train came, we all split and I ran down the platform to ensure avoiding an overcrowded bike carriage... As I wheeled her in, I stopped and realised.. and stuck my body back outside the train to look back to where I left it... The doors shut and I held them open with my forearm thinking.. what can I do? Nothing was the answer so I let the door shut and it clamped onto my backwheel which was still half out the door... Yanked the bike back in, then had a moment to think how bad it was.... BAD. Wallet, Phone, Car Keys....

Jumped next door to my neighbours and they all said, yup, you gotta get it back... So I got off at Hazelbrook to head back Sad The next train back was in 1 hour so I rode back, which only took about 10 min and fortunately the bag was still on the platform! Phew!

I was just going to diddle around Woodford till they came back when John told me to drive to the Pot shop in Wentworth falls. So fortunately I was able to beat them to the Pot shop and join them for the full ride! Smiling Fantastic ride too, the tracks you showed us John were amazing, Thanks!!

Luckily enough we managed to stuff two big bikes in the back of Liams Mazda 2 and he kindly gave me a lift back up to the pot shop to my car Smiling Thanks mate!

Cheers,
Loz

Sounds like another awesome day, sorry I missed Saturday, but the WWS yesterday was a killer (but the track completely kicked ass - a must see for any Sydney rider). I'd hate to think how much harder it would have been with a Saturday full or Andos and sniggle in the legs! Laughing out loud

anke13's picture

Thanks, John for organising. I especially enjoyed the single track on Saturday arvo and yesterday.

Also thanks to everyone for your great company and patiently waiting for me to catch up.

Can't wait for part 2!

Hans's picture

Many thanks to John for organising this epic weekend and overnighter!

This includes looking after all the logistics (incl. the hidden firewood and the BBQ)...

It was nice to meet your family and other BM locals too!

I am looking forward to the next ride up in the mountains ...and after listening to my dinner tales (e.g. the description of Saturday's single track sessions and the secret North Shore) my kids (keen MTB'ers) will join too...

...and BTW: I've looked into the next BLING item for the serious Blue Mountains biker - much needed for the excellent, but rareley used overgrown tracks...

is such a good track, fast, exciting and mildly technical it warrants some serious work to clear it to avoid the scratches and whipping you have to sustain to ride it. A petrol hedge trimmer would be ideal-anyone have one of these?
I did 2 hours with secateurs a long time ago but that wasn't enough.
One idea I had was to organise a ride meeting there for 10:30am on a weekend with those keen to do some pruning by bike or foot arriving at 8:30am. If we had 10 people armed with secatuers we could do 600m of track each then enjoy the clear riding afterwards.
John.

Supagav's picture

Groover i like your thinking, im keen to help out with a bit of track clearing to open this up. Im sitting at work at the moment digging out little black bits of stick instead of working. How good is my job...

Carlgroover's picture

That's what you get for riding at light speed, I used the force to guide me.

Supagav's picture

i was going for the ZEN feeling of been one with the bike.
Not completely true i lost my gloves somewhere on Sat night. Anyone find a pair of fox glove XXL in their kit???
