Hi, with summer approaching, a few mates and I are looking to get out of the comfortzone in Glenrock and venture on some day trips. We are looking for some superb singletrack or awesome firetrails within around 150km of Newcastle. We already have a trip to Awaba planned and were debating whether to ride the california or old bulga rd trails. Any hints/suggestions? cheers

For a 40k ride with a big hill climb start and big descent finish an out and back, starting at the North end is a good option. Remainder of the trail is easy climbs and descents with some nice scenery along the way.

Watch that final descent though. It is very fast, very loose, very eroded and very steep over the edge. You can pick up a lot of speed and find yourself having difficulty washing it off.

If you want single track Dungog Common. Over 20km of Single track ranging from fast flowing to rocky and technical. Great area as well. Then you have Singleton fast flowing single track. Approx 9.5km loop. Bulga has great views but is a fire trail like Cascades or Terry Hills. I Rate Dungog first, Awaba second , Glenrock third, Singleton fourth. You also have Jesmond park.

The Dungog Common has some great trails so I would recommend going up there. James Estate is a great track also if you can travel that far.

There are some good fire trails and hills around Duns Creek, Clarence Town and Glen Oak. Webbers Creek rd at Paterson is a good dirt rd with some good views further along but probably wouldn't bother unless you have someone showing you around and been to all the other tracks.

Enjoy the single, work up an appetite and squash it with a smashing pie at the bakery

+1for Dungog but if your after about 50ks of superb singletrack make the trip up to Taree.Well worth the 1:40 min drive up the coast.

Yep Dungog is right up there with the best single track in the area.

James Estate is well worth the drive, they hold the Jetblack 12 hr race out there so nuff said!

Awaba is great fun, not real technical at all however it's fairly quick is places and not far down the road. I head here after work during daylight savings so not far at all really. You can do a lap in around 50 mins at medium pace. Ourimbah is awesome fun too, another 30 mins past Awaba or thereabouts. It has a few different options with a XC, AM and DH tracks marked out.

If anyone is keen to ride at some stage, hit me up. A few of my mates have had their bikes stolen and aren't replacing them anytime soon and the rest are all crazy crossfit nuts these days so getting them out on the trails is cheating or whatever excuse they have. Riding alone is great but it would be nice to find some like minded individuals/groups.
