2008 NSW State Trials Titles

Matt's picture

By Matt - Posted on 30 April 2008

When:
Sunday, 11 May, 2008 - 08:00
Duration:
9 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Meeting Point:

Pacific Park - See posts below

Details:

Tired of that boring XC/Enduro grind?
Want an opportunity to show your skills?
Have no idea but just want to try something different for a change?
Or just want to watch how the pro's hop up 6ft one handed?

Then this might be the day for you, details in the link here - http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/showthread.php?...

I went along to this a year or so back and it was tops, there are three classes, with novice being pretty doable if you can ride in a straight line without stabilisers Eye-wink I think Caro and a few others have been along for this also, feel free to chip in with a comment or two Caro! All are welcome, in Adam's words "Would be rad to see a few non-trials dudes out there" how can you say no!

You can even bring your mother as an extra spesh mothers day gift Eye-wink

PS - the bit that says "the meeting times are ready to ride..." is obviously not quite right for this and you don't have to stick around for 9 hours, unless you win of course...

PPS - Oh and there might just be some XC thingo going on at the same time/location so will be a veritable feast of bikeness.

Who's in?
Matt, lozza6

If these are held this weekend they wont be at Arcadia as this track is no longer available. Sad

Matt's picture

What happened? I'll try and get an update from Macbeth on if it's still on and if so where.

And does that mean the MWMTB social ride Saturday is off too?

Ta,
Matt.

ar_junkie's picture

According to the MW calendar it is.

phantom's picture

That would be correct Matt
Eastern Suburbs MCC are selling or have sold the land and have cancelled MWMTB hiring of the land
The club is now searching for a new location.
The XC planned for Sunday looks to be relocated to St Ives showgroung
This will be confirmed tomorrow

I love trials!!!!

I love the precision of it all! those guys are amazing!!

I've always wanted to learn, but I know I just dont have the skillz!!

even to do a rear wheel hop would be great! Laughing out loud

so $20 and I can go do some novice courses? That would be way cool

Bring a hardtail?

Loz

Matt's picture

Hardtail is best but not essential, you can still have a go on a full susser.

Novice courses are an easy beginning and I'd expect a full novice course so will keep you busy/entertained.

Matt.

alchemist's picture

A hardtail is ideal for Novice courses, put the seat down as low as it can go, pick an easy gear and go. Just think of it as slow XC and remember not to put your hand down. A dually makes it a bit harder but not imposible. I competed at the National Champs a couple of years ago on a Prophet and managed not to come last (against people on trials bikes) - just.

lozza6's picture

Hey, thanks for posting this up Matt!

I'm definitely very keen on this!

I have a small sized Scott hardtail which I think will go much better than my Yeti 575 Sticking out tongue

So how does it work? Just rock up and pay the $20? No need to register or book ahead of time?

Will be great just to watch the pros! Laughing out loud

Always loved watching Ryan Leech videos!

Cheers,
Loz

lozza6's picture

I have skinny 1.9" tyres on my Scott....

Would it be an idea to maybe put the 2.3" tyres from my other bike on the hardtail?

Cheers,
Loz

Rob's picture

Yeah, put those WTB monsters on it and leave 'em there! Then get something more fitting for the Yeti! Sticking out tongue

alchemist's picture

Rock-up on the day & pay your $20 - you'll need to buy a day licence if you don't have a MTBA licence.

Competition works like this

Usually there are 5 courses, each of which you will have to ride 3 times. Time limit for each run of a coures is 2'30". In each run you are allowed a maximum of 5 penalties, a foot down is a penalty, a hand down is 5 penalties, two feet down is 5 penalties and every 15 seconds longer than 2'30" is 1 penalty. There are a few others but these are the main ones to remember and they are fairly easy on judging novice. If you do put your foot down use it, you can pivot, reposition the bike etc as long as you don't take your foot off the ground it remains only one penalty.

Caro rode at the State Champs last year, so she might have a few tips also Eye-wink

lozza6's picture

Novices have to compete!?? Shocked

How intimidating!

I thought I could just learn a few things and then watch the pros Sticking out tongue

alchemist's picture

If you just want to turn up and not ride it wont cost you anything.

Give it a go! Novice trials is not really any harder than what you ride normally on an XC ride and the pros will be around to give you tips.

lozza6's picture

Would love to watch the pros, so I'll be there!

Will humiliate myself too Smiling

Cheers,
Loz

Thanks Matt for sharing this event with us! Matt did really well competing in the sportsman class and did well to come 4th in his category! Representing us XCers Smiling Well done mate! What was more exciting was was him having the biggest stack of the day doing a superman endo off a 4 foot drop and sliding down a steep slope stopping breifly before continuing onto a backflip off another cliff edge! Shocked Fortunely he was ok with only minor amounts of blood.

I had a tough time in novice as I cant even trackstand on the uneven ground... makes me realise I have alot more to achieve before I try again next time Laughing out loud With a little bit of practice it could be quite achievable.

Here are some pics of the elite guys who were stunningly good.

Vids to come...

Cheers,
Loz

Matt's picture

You neglected to mention that there were only 5 people in Sport Eye-wink I'm just happy I didn't come last! Nice pics too, good to see you got some of that huge drop off, what do you reckon it was 9ft 'ish?

I'm always pleasantly surprised at how approachable and friendly these guys are, I'll definitely be back for more punishment.

I have a bit of video of the pro's from section 1 that looks good, but I'm no expert at putting it up anywhere, would I be able to e-mail it to you for you to post somewhere?

Ta,
Matt.

PS - the prize gloves were tops on the ride to work this morning, though I realised the shirt I got for the biggest stack is from an outfit by the name of Koxx, in big bold letters! Sack the marketing department...

lozza6's picture

Yeah, 2 prizes! Well done! Shame you cant wear one of them Sticking out tongue

The dropoff was monstrous! Got some vids of it too. Slowly in the process of uploading them...

Sure thing mate, e-mail me the vids and I'll put them up. e-mail is in my nobmob profile.

Cheers,
Loz

Stuart M's picture

Do we know any of them?

lozza6's picture

Some of Australia's best trials riders!

AK/Craig/Peace/Macbeth Smiling

Matt's picture

You'll probably have seen Adam Macbeth around, he works at CBD and was the marshall who helped out when Kiwiboy broke his wrist at the Ourimbah Fat Tyre Fest.

The rest you've probably never seen before unless you hang around Hyde park on a Wednesday night...

Ta,
Matt.

Flynny's picture

Adam is awesome to watch and also goes hard at XC too.

He has put on some big demos for us out this way and ran the state round that took in old mining machinery at the State Mine Museum...

alchemist's picture

AK is pretty quick on an XC bike too. I think it is because both of them are so skinny that they have zero air resistance.

lozza6's picture

So NERRR Sticking out tongue

Stuart M's picture

I knew none of them were you cause none of them had their shadow tagging along

lozza6's picture

hehehe

Matt is in the red shirt...

Laughing out loud

Buck is there.. somewhere.. right? ^_^
