I installed a rigid (carbon) fork on my hardtail 29er for a commuter about 1000km ago. Sharpened up the handling compared to the susp fork I had previously, and saved over a kilo in the process.
Was about 170 bucks delivered, within a week, from http://www.flyxii.com/en/products/29er-mtb-fork....
No complaints.
