Commute advise

Hey guys, looks like I might have a new commute to Redfern starting soon.
I've never needed to ride across town before.
Anyone got a good route from the Bridge to Abercrombie St?
Obviously I'd like to as much off road or away from traffic as possible.
Cheers peeps.

The most obvious route is to use the Kent St cycleway, but with the lights being green for riders for 6 seconds every two minutes - if there's a cyclist on the grid to trigger them - it will add a good 10 minutes to your journey time.

I'm at Darling Harbour and prefer to turn right rather than left at the Observatory end of the Bridge and slip down to Hickson Rd. From there I'll go to Barangaroo as its pretty empty before 9 and the views are nicer than getting stuck with the trucks on Sussex St.

From there you can work your way to the southern end of Chinatown to Central, but from there on you would need to consult a Sydney Rides map.

On the way back the slip road running along the back of Darling Harbour gets you away from the crowds of peds of an evening until you can get back onto Hickson.

Does that help? Sorry it's not a complete solution.

I used to commute by bike from the Northern Beaches to Ultimo. From the Bridge I would go down Kent St, right onto King St, cross Pyrmont Bridge, then Murray St, left onto Pyrmont St which turns into Quarry St, cross Harris St, left onto Bulwara Rd, right onto William Henry St, cross Wattle St, left onto Bay St, left again onto Kelly St, and then right onto Mountain St. Not sure where you need to be on Abercrombie St, but you could cross Broadway at the lights at the end of Mountain St and then go down Shepherd St.

Hey guys thanks so much for the replies. Very helpful indeed. Do either of you have a Strava plot of the route you take? Thanks again fellas.

Hey guys further to recent good advice I've started my commute to Redfern.
First few goes were a bit ropey due to getting lost and also experimenting with alternate routes.
Finally got it sorted and the help from here was invaluable as always.
Cheers guys.

Although that climb up from Roseville Bridge on the way home is a bugger on tired legs.

No worse than the steepness coming up from Seaforth though, I suppose.Smiling

Yeah Hawkeye.
My mind goes somewhere else when I get to Roseville.
Rode 5 days this week in preparation for Xmas binge drinking!!

I actually miss that climb.... that kick at the top makes it that more satisfying when you get a PR. I use a Garmin 520 so just set myself a goal and raced against it. Also fun eating the cars up the hill in peak hour Eye-wink

Yeah, I must admit I kind of miss it too. I was very fit when commuting to and from Sydney Olympic park ~30km.
