Details:
Social medium paced mid week night ride out to the end of the long track and back this is not a training ride so there will be some stopping and talking. And I will even hang around for a drink after if that gets Bernd out there.

Seeing as it will be my first ride since the QB weekend and I'm supposed to be impressing people with a 100k'er on Sunday. Might try & do an extra lap if I can finish work early enough if anyone's interested - say 6pm start at the tavern. If it takes longer than 1.5 hours I'll meet y'all on the way out...

Blew the rear shock at ourimbah on the weekend so I have to rebuild the cannondale, if I can get it together in time I might pop along.
does that just leave you open for teasing for owning a crack and fail...
Afraid not it was a stumpy that broke, the cannondale I have had for ten years without a problem. But dont tell anyone, I am trying to stay out of the specialized/cannondale debate.

Can anybody recommend a reasonable to good set of lights for someone who will ride at night on occasion?
If poss. in low price, mid price and high price range.

I can tell you what not to get and that's the cheap ones from Torpedo 7. I fell for the special deal and they are rubbish.
Basically everyone is going LED these days. You get what you pay for as with everything.
Check the Ay-ups, they are a good favourite (around $450 I think) - http://www.ayup.com.au/

Also the new Cree LED is out soon I think - http://nobmob.com/node/5223
Mick just got some Exposure lights from the US, but I think they are quite pricey although probably awesome (lots!) - http://www.use1.com/exposure/
It could be a good excuse to make some great lights if you can source some. That should cover your price points Try to go for bike mounted and helmet mounted.
