LED lights from China
Yesterday someone was asking about lights and I stumbled across a great site called candlepower. I started digging and there appear to be a huge number of people doing incredibly detailed reports on LED torches.. One that caught my eye was the JetBeam Jet II
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.p...
It's output seems to be massive for it's size (using the Cree 7090 XR-E Q5), the only downside is the battery life, but surely taking another battery along would solve that problem. I'm thinking more of a helmet mounted light here, just to supplement my rubbish Halogen lights.
They are cheap on ebay too..

Anyone with more knowledge about this care to put me straight?

the lithium batteries this uses are quite expensive. Best to get a rechargeable litium battery if you are going to use this.
That's a bit steep. When I read 'cheap' I was thinking more like $10!
Cutter do a similar kit for less than that. You'd have to find a housing but cheap as chips to build your own, or you can buy one from Cutter too.
Try Dealextreme. I've got stuff for Paige's Nintendo DS here before. Free shipping too.

You can also get rechargeable lithium batteries and chargers here for the torch too.
You're going to get me to roll my own aren't you
I'll see if I can work my way through cutter then..
cheers
Wow, cheers Buck, that's more like it.
Let us know how they are if you do get one. I've been tempted to buy one of these high powered LED torches to take out on Army....with a red filter of course
When I was looking at the cutter site, having no idea I was clicking what looked to be the best options and I came up with something quite expensive and then still needing a battery. This also then only gave me one light so I assumed double this for 2 lights.
This is why I went the easy option of Ay Ups which I am very impressed with.
I'm still looking to get this from cutter...

I'll run 4 R2s with the FATMAN booster..
that way I can run it off a 3 cell lithium Pack (11.1V)
That should put out a fair bit of light at 1 Amp
Loz
$213 US today only

Such old tech... move along people and go LED.
LED's are soooo 5 minutes ago...go bundled la$ers...see below for the latest DIY home project:
Flashlamp-pumped high-gain fiber-bundle lasers consisting of multimode phosphate glass fibers have superceeded even the brightest Cree U-bin and Luxeon LED's. By optimizing the fiber number and the outcoupling reflectivity in dependence on the pump conditions, high single-pulse energies in excess of 1 J as well as high-average-power extraction up to 100 W at a pulse repetition frequency of 100 Hz could be obtained from slim fiber-bundle lasers. Fiber numbers in the range of 150–250 and reflectivities between 35% and 50% have been found to provide reliable performance, even in the current wet conditions of Terrey Hills and long trail. Full instructions to be posted soon...

But much brighter than the current AyUps and if you buy 2 its about the same cost but insanely bright. Would burn a hole through even Pikey's nuke proof shorts
