Bright is the new mountain bike mecca of Australia - there are not only excellent trails in and around Bright but Falls creek, Mount Beauty, Beechworth and Yackandandah are all within and hours drive away (Falls Creek probably around 75min). Bright also has some excellent trails for the kids with single track along the river and a pump track that will keep them entertained for hours.

Also if you have the space take your road bike as the rides to Mount Buffalo, Hotham, Falls Creek (via Tawonga gap) are also some of the best you'll find in Australia.
There is also heaps for the children and the wifes (if they don't mountain bike) to do with walks, wineries, berry farms, olive tasting, brewery (if she likes beer ) and numerous cafes dotted around town.

We stayed there on a boys MTB trip at the end of November.
There were about 8 of us and we rode all the Bright trails (awesome), did a Falls Creek daytrip, a Beechworth and Yackandandah day trip (must visit the Beechworth brewery), and rode Porepunkah.
It was such a good trip, that despite having done Rotorua and Taupo before x2 over the past 5 years, we have booked in for another boys trip next year.....just need to tell the wives
If you leave at 6am on a Saturday (from Lane Cove), the drive time is 6.5 hours, which is great as even with stops for coffee and lunch, you still get down in time to knock out 3 hours on the trails on the day.
Highly recommended.
Note: I am a mate of Minter's (Warthog), but we all paid for our accommodation and all recommendations are given without any bias. If you go to Bright and don't have an AWESOME time then you really are not fit to call yourself a mountain biker.
On top of it all, it is a really really nice little town with great restaurants and cafe's and friendly locals.
Do yourself and your mates a favour and do this. Bright is far enough away to make it feel like a proper road trip, but not so far that it's a drag (and no need to worry about baggage handlers roughing up your precious bike)... and aside from all of the superb mountain biking, right out your back door, it's a beautiful little town with craft beers, good food, coffee and everything else.
I've only been on a few biking road trips, but one of the more important things to get right is the accommodation. You take it for granted when you're at home, but you need somewhere to store, clean and fix the bikes, wash your sweaty gear, somewhere to clean yourself, and somewhere to cook quite a lot of food. Sounds trivial, but can be a real pain if you get this wrong... and Minter's house did the trick for us.
Of course, the other way to do it (particularly over Christmas) is to take the family. Lots of good riding for them if that's their fancy, but plenty else to do if its not... and the house would easily sleep two families. Bright has a picturesque river for swimming, lots of beautiful bushwalking nearby, a Cinema and lolly shop... you can ride between 6 and 9am, then do the family thing all day.
Highly recommended.
So is the house for sale? How much for cash?
