Help! I need a helmet cam buddie

Having recently acquired a new 'Hero helmet cam' I quickly realised it makes pretty dull post ride viewing if you're on your own! If anyone fancies doing a couple of laps of the dam at the weekend let me know. I usually do a lap in around 40 mins so I guess I'm about average fitness. I'm originally from the UK and can't wait to send the footage home to show my mates what they're missing in the northern beaches.

Tried mine three times and was constantly "buzzed" by sound and static. Contacted Hero, very apologetic said send it straight back, just the camera and will ship a replacment immediately. That was nearly a month ago.

So what is the pic quality like when it works properly?

If anyone else is interested wheelworld.com have them at $169.99 http://wheelworld.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=...
They had a 20% off any order code as well http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=430116 but I think you may have missed that, was three days only

Mine seems to work fine on the bike or helmet so far. I have only played back on the PC and not on the TV as yet. I did get some really bad 'buzz' sound when I strapped to the front of a hire car and nailed it at 150kmh down the road. But thats another story.....

in those Hero cams but the quality is pretty low for the price so I keep wondering whether to wait longer for a better quality one.

do you think it's worth it ?

Really hard to judge quality by what you see on youtube. Look at the footage on their site, that said you're then taking a sellers word that they aren't uploading stuff from a much better quality camera.

I can't really comment on video quality because I've yet to get it working properly.

I can comment on customer service. I contacted them when I was having trouble. They are very slow to respond to email, normally atleast two to three days, yes taking into account time difference. Their initial response was great. Really apologetic. Just send the camera over to us and we'll send another one straight back to you.

Well, they have now had that camera for three weeks. I have no idea if a new one has been sent. My last response from them was about two weeks ago and they said it would be sent "in the next day or two tops" Should have had it by now if that were true.

Look on places like deal extreme and daily deals, you'll find cheap video cameras, similar resolution, in the same price range. The benefit they will have is that you can see what you are recording without the need for a computer.

I will update this when I get another response from GoPro.

You can get a cheap standard digital camera that would probably do the same thing (and you would have a playback screen)

I guess the advantage for me of the hero is that it's easy to attach with quick release clips, is relatively small and has a small waterproof case. Which is good as I'm planning to take it sea kayaking too.

If you want really great quality playback then I would probably go for something else. But if you just want to chuck it in your bag and clip it on your helmet at the top of your favourite downhill then it does the job.

In retrospect maybe its a bit expensive for what it is, but I break stuff really easily and this seems fairly robust.

Let me know if you want to go for a test ride and I can burn the footage to disk.
