Route to the City
Hi - does anybody ride to the city from the Northern Beaches.
I am fed up with public transport and want to try riding for a while. Does anybody know the best route to the Bridge.
I am not going to ride on military road as its way too dangerous, so I will be taking the back roads. I only need directions from the top of Parrawee road?

This is the route I take on the way in

You can ride on the footpath between Parrawi and Stanton so you avoid riding along Spit Road. I also go around the roundabout at the junction of Alfred and High Sts in North Sydney and cross over to a path (you are meant to dismount and walk along this path) that leads to Ennis Rd near Milsons Point station and you then cross under the bridge to get up to the Cycle path.
and this is the route home:

Slightly different from the way in.
I have mates that do slightly different routes, but this is my route. You just need to watch for idiots in Mosman especially at roundabouts.
Let me know if its not clear.
Hi Woftt
I'm not sure where Parrawee road is, but here is my route from Frenchs Forest to Newtown which might help. Back roads to the top of the Roseville bridge, over the pedestrian walk way over W. Road, up to the top of the hill and down Eastern Valley Way and over the bridge there. Turn left onto Miller St. Pacific HW for a short spell and onto the Harbor bridge (riding up the steps of course), turn right at the end and over Pyrmont Bridge etc.. etc.. (all in all about 59km's for the day for me).
That might help (I have only done it a couple of times now so there are bound to be refinements to this).
You can pick up a FREE map from KOM in Neutral Bay
Hi LadyToast
What's it like riding across Roseville Bridge? Do you go on the road in either direction, or stick to the footpath?
Your route along Eastern Valley Way sounds busy... you could also try through Willoughby along High St and down Marlborough Rd, then on bike paths hook up with West St, and down the highway through North Sydney to the bridge... less traffic and less ups and downs.

Hi Sean
The ride along Roseville bridge is OK, I don't go on the road, footpath the whole time. There is a section where the path turns to dirt but it's ok in the morning. The other way is to go down the hill then under the Roseville bridge and up the other side, just adds a bit more to the already quite long climb. Lovely down there though
Thanks for the other tips. I'll check that out the next time I do it.

Good move! Riding to work is a fantastic way to start the day. I feel great when I hit my desk in the morning.
I ride Mon-Wed-Fri most weeks, so you can tag along with me if you like.
I can definitely understand being concerned about Military Road. It takes some time to get used to riding in traffic, and you're wise to want to ease into it. I do ride Military Road now that I'm "acclimatised" and have found it worrisome on only a couple of occasions - although I've been known to use the footpath when it gets choked.
It's all about having "presence" on the road. So long as you look well ahead and you're visible, predictable, assertive, "own the lane you're in" and don't ride timidly you're going to be OK - you're almost always faster than the traffic. Never gutter hug - this invites drivers to shave you.
The only two times I've been concerned about driver behaviour were on Friday nights homeward bound. The mood seemed impatient and aggressive. Must have been a tough week for a lot of people. No problem - I just took the back way.
There are alternate routes that I'd be happy to show you if Military Road is more than you want to deal with, but be prepared for a bit of up-and-down.
PM me if you're interested.
I live in Roseville Chase, at the top of Roseville hill.
Most days I travel to North Sydney via Frenchs Forest.
The route is:
Waringah rd over the bridge ( I go down the road cos it's pretty quiet going east at that time of day)
Down forest way
Over the spit, and up Parawi (turn left at the lights at the bottom of the spit hill) for the most beautuful view out the heads, and rarely ever a car on the road
Along bike path on spit rd for 200m
Turn left then follow the back streets around mosman, cremorne and neutral bay below Military rd
Pass around the park near the sydney yacht squadron,
And up the hill to Milsons point and the steps to the bridge cycleway.
I'll post one of my motionbased maps when I get a chance.
The alternative way I go direct from Roseville Chase to North Syd (assuming you are coming over Roseville Bridge)
Come down Roseville hill
Cross over to the footpath before the bottom of the hill
Go over the bridge on the footpath
Do a hard right once over the bridge, and go under the bridge
This will bring you out on Babbage Rd, parallel to Waringah rd
Go up the hill, turn left into Warrane Rd (It's blocked off from trafic but easy access on a bike)
All the way up Warrane, Turn right on Boundary
Turn left onto Eastern valley way for 200m
Cross over into the business park
Through to Gibbes St
Right onto Smith St
LEft down High st to the end
Do a right / left and down to Willoughby leasure centre
Pick up the cycleway (right) to gore hill cycleway
Then either follow the cycleway along the freeway OR
Wind your way through to Crows nest and down the pacific hwy to N Syd.
(I'llpost a motion based of that one too.)
I do both on either my single speed or road bike, and for some extra training sometimes take the mtb and do a lap of Manly Dam on the way (of option 1). There are a bunch of mtb tracks along the way to make it interesting and keep the nobbies off the tarmac for about a third of the way.
If anyone wants to hook up one morning for either of the routes let me know. I usually leave around 7.30-7.45 from Roseville unless I'm doing something a bit longer.

Hi Whisperer,
I might well take you up on one of those rides one morning too, would love to see the off road on the way.

Hey thanks Nick, and all you guys who responded. Appreciate your input. Nick this looks like a good route. How long does it take you to complete this section? And how many times do you ride this route?
Further to the dangers of Military road - I am a regular bus commuter having worked in the city and north sydney for the past few years. I have been standing at the front of the bus at times and seen the way some buses tail gate riders, and it just horrify's me. One slip and its all over. Only for the bold im afraid - I'd rather stick to hucking and the A line trail at Oxford falls. If I am going to get hurt I would rather it be my own fault.
The other thing is the pollution on that road. I think the back streets will be somewhat better in that respect.
Yes, I'm very occasionally on the receiving end of tailgating, I must admit.
I found a polite but firmly-worded letter quoting the bus rego number, route number, time of day and nearest intersection was effective. They said the driver had been disciplined but I never got an answer when I asked for detail on how. Nevertheless, STA bus driver behaviour improved dramatically for a period of about 4-5 months afterwards, so it seems they told the truth.
Of course, they eventually slip back into old habits.
It would be useful if you see it happen again to let the driver know firmly that you think he's being a dickhe*d. A bit of peer pressure can only help.
from top of Parriwi Road to steps up to cycle path on the Harbour Bridge and the same time in reverse. I typically do this three times a week and if you want I can meet you one morning at Parriwi and show you the route.
Check out Supreme Cycles web page under news
They commute Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday leaving the shop at 6.20am
They ride the back streets as a group and there is never any agro.
The pace is easy and a cup of coffee awaits on Thursday at the rocks

I commute from N Curl Curl to wynyard and back twice a week. Unfortunately I don't have the patience for the back roads and typically just stick to Military road. I usually find it ok as long as you ride sensibly ( famous last words perhaps ?)
Depending on the number of buses blocking the T3 lane, I sometimes go left at Cremorne junction and down through the bottom of neutral bay and kirribilli. I'll post some pics of the bike I use.... sort of extreme hybrid !

Thanks Nick I will take up your offer to show me the route. I will need to sort out a few things first like access to the bike cage and shower/change room facilities at work. Perhaps a set of clothes at work would help. What days do you ride?
I could propably meet you one morning at the very top of Parriwi?
I sent you a private message with my details.
