Good Goose

Yeah

Thanks Mark..I have no children (far from that) so I put all my time, money and effort into looking after the Goose. I love it and would like to keep it, but cant have three bikes so this has to go.

Anyone have any idea's on what I should get? I want a do it all BIKE! Lets say that one again.."A Do It All Mountain Hungry Machine". One that rides up a hill with ease but rides down faster then a keg of beer!

What about those Nomads??

enduro! (now watch the feathers fly! )

575.....

... although I was impressed with CB's 575 when I rode home with him last night. Haven't seen it go off-road yet, though ...

N+1

There is no such thing as a 'do it all bike'. OK, well, there is and I have two of 'em - a Rush and a 575 Eye-wink

Point is I don't think there is one perfect all round bike, even in those that are clearly meant to be that. So if you can keep what you have.

BTW - what are your other two models?

Little-Ditty's picture

A Yeti 575? Are you serious? Well maybe, if it has the 160mm forks. But I would question the sturdiness of the frame. I can't see an 11 point something kilo frame being able to ride everywhere, as you are requesting.

I agree with Rob that there is probably not a do-it-all bike. If you had two bikes, it makes your decisions that much easier. My suggestion would be to go bigger rather than smaller.

If you had to pick one bike to ride everywhere, I would buy a Reign or Reign X, or maybe a Norco Six. They are far cheaper than a Santa Cruz, etc. The bikes won't go quick up a hill. But at least you will make it. Get a bike that also has at least two rings up front.

Hans's picture

I'm with Gazza...once you had the big S you'll never go back... Eye-wink

Jeeten...when are you coming for the test ride that I've offered?

12.3 kgs, 6" travel. The young bike mechs at the LBS even take theirs for serious DH drops at Ourimbah/Oxford Falls...

BTW: Guess what Sam Hill is riding this summer...? Eye-wink

make sure you bring your own pedals and seat.

We swapped bikes for a little bit on Wednesday night and I was so thrown by his pedals and saddle that I didn't even notice the bike itself.

LadyToast's picture

575 - Best bike I have ridden.

Climbs like a mountain goat and descends even better. Whilst you might not get a bike that does everything, for me it's as close I could get and is more capable than I will ever be.

But I am biased Smiling

Matt's picture

IMHO this is close to the do it all bike. The travel's long enough to eat up the biggest hucks, and the frame's strong enough to cope too, check the gussets on the current models...

You can set it up how you like, lightweight for a sub 12kg enduro racer with a light fork and skinnk tyres, or go for a heavy 6 inch+ fork like a Lyric and some 2.5/2.3 tyres for more fun stuff, while still being able to ride it all day.

It doesn't consistently win best bike and get super high ratings for nothing. It's a simple design that works, no messing with stupid proprietary parts (e.g. big S suspension), no carbon, a quality warranty/replacement policy and it looks the biz.

You can make it as cheap or as expensive as you like if you build it up yourself too, and you won't be a sheep...

Paul's picture

I must agree with Dylan, a yeti is the way to - but if a light weight high end mountain bike with 5.75 inches of travel that goes like a scolded cat isn't your perfect bike, then why not look at Yeti's 7 inch travel ASR .

http://www.yeticycles.com/#/ourrides/ASR_7/WHITE/

As I have said before my theory is that mountain bike riders can be categorised into 3 groups:
1) Those who know nothing about bikes,
2) Those that own a Yeti, and
3) Those that wish they owned a Yeti.

Dave rode a Santa Cruz Nomad the other night and it looked pretty awesome. That could almost do it all.

Harry's picture

Saw a 2008 Reign X in BA with the splurb "if you could only have one bike" and I know Pikey on his older version takes on more than most in the way of drops and difficult terrian and is pretty competitive in the XC stakes as well. The new version is also a lighter bike but still a 6" machine. Best bet is the same advice that has been up here before - ride them all and you'll warm to one more than the others.

cRAZY Canuck's picture

I've got a Heckler and it's a great ride, the nomads came out just after I got my Frame and look pretty nice as well.

Nother to look at would be the Kona Bike range they spit out some pretty good gear.

Matt's picture

Then have a look at an Ellsworth Truth or Moment. Expensive but awesome and again simple proven designs that always win very high praise. You'll probably be the first on the forum to own one too.

money was no object
I would consider a Turner 5 spot now with the DW link rear
No colour - just polished aluminium

*drool*

I've yet to see one on the trail Laughing out loud

Norco six would have to be the best value for money???

I might choose the Nomad if money was no object...

Dudes

Thanks for the response! Sounds as though there are alot of wise men (didnt see any womans names or anything that might sound like one) out there. I think the WINNER is Hans! I just can't get over those Enduros! Currently the prices I have been quoted are quite good!
The Nomads have a large $$ value, with low level components (that i have seen, i.e. Bike City Depot). I'd have to wait till I found a second hand frame then work my magic to get it to my suiting. Ohh & plus a repaint is a MUST.

Hans I test rode a Enduro last week and liked them, but thanks for the offer. Maybe at the next ride meet. I'd get the Expert, good level of components, haven't seen it in the flesh yet, so not sure if that gold will look any good? Never know that might just get painted too!! haha..I have colour issue!! Why can't you just order a bike online and customize to suit? It can't be there difficult for a US company to set-up a small factory in AUS ready to take our special orders.

My other bike is a Avanti Scratch 29 which I bought for the road. Reason being, big wheels and i'm not into Lycra BUT I LOVE RIDING ON THE ROAD.

Hi Ditty

Cant help thinking that in my case the 575's limitations don't centre around the 'short' fork or light weight..... more to do with the complete lack of skill of it's pilot !

I'm hoping some of it's adventurous spirit rubs off on me....

FWIW though... I'm seriously limited to one bike ( space requirements etc.) so in this case the 575 is my ideal 'do it all ' bike. I can commute on it ( with a set of mavic speedcity 700 wheels, locked out Revelation and RP23)) during the week and put on some Crossmax ST's for the wekend. In November I'll be doing the Gong ride, the Highland Fling and the Fat Trye Festival all on the same bike.... If I could have 2 or 3 bikes I would, but if I can only have one, the 575 is pretty hard to beat.... ( the Cannondale Rize was pretty good too)

I've been riding a Turner 5 spot for 4 years and still love it - it just eats up the old north road, the Dam (~35min hot lap), and any technical trail in Sydney.
I've commuted, raced, done epic rides, gone over and down stuff that I shouldn't have and it keeps on going.
I used to have road and trail wheels for it, but these are now on different bikes.

Now that the new model has DW link rear end, it will pedal even better than the horst link that I've got.
If I was limited to a single bike though, it would be either an Ibis Mojo, Pivot 5 or Specialised enduro or stumpy.

There is no single bike, sadly, so I have a single speed bitsa for commuting, a dedicated race bike and an aging road bike to keep the Turner company.

Early word from a very jaded cycling journalist from the interbike outdoor demo is that the 5 spot as the best pedaling dually he's ever ridden - even better than the Ibis Mojo.

A real do it all bike and the only one that you will find with a super light triple crown fork if you hurry up and buy a 2008 (no longer available for 2009 unless you go s-works). Plus a 2008 will be discounted as well!

Suspension comes with 5 year warranty and the bike rides amazingly and it has so many set ups that if you spend sometime dialling it you will find that this fork/shock works well for any type of riding. If you don’t have time to play with it, just wack it on soft compression and enjoy……

If light DH/FR, just throw some stronger rims which is what I've done on my one.

Fork comes with a 25mm axle (Moto X style) which gives this bike amazing manoeuvrability going up or down.

I’M A BIG FAN OF THIS BIKE!!!!!!

I did everything from oirimbah and oxford falls downhill to wildside in tasy on my 07 reign x1 so I can testify their value for money awesome ride. Those specialized enduros look sick though.

No affiliation with CC, no kickbacks, nothing like that. Just I like their bike builder thingo. Hmmm... that said, doesn't have all the drop down option on this frame that's usually on offer. Puzzled

Alex's picture
