Where Was Your Bike Made

Saw a link to this on Farkin.

It confirms what a lot of us already thought. It would seem that more of us are probably riding Giants than you would suspect.

Giant apparently has the biggest bike manufacturing plant in the world (see link). They make most of the worlds frames at their plant. I saw a video someplace of how they do it and its certainly no back street welding house. All state of the art.
Does it matter what factory welds them together, I wonder? It's really the design and R&D that diferentiate.
Interesting topic. Marketing and Branding = perception.
Nike doesnt make shoes, it's now a sales and marketing company.

That's a simplistic way of looking at it. The design and quality control still come from the bike company.

That said, there were a lot of nervous bike companies back when Giant first stated they'd start marking their own branded bikes.

Given the same quality control systems and the same bots welding the bits together the rest comes down to design and materials speced in the process.

I have no worries at all that the frames (particularly) are manufactured in Taiwan or China. The fabrication processes that I have seen in movies or read about here or there are top quality. Who here can realistically diss the frame building quality that comes from Asia? More likely, it is the smaller modular components that are added to the frame like forks, wheels, derailleurs, etc that are of poorer quality. As long as a manufacturer gets their frame/bike back to assemble, test, then sell, then I am fine with it.

I always knew that my Giant Reign was made from the finest aluminum sourced from the rarest mines in the world and now having read that article “where did your bike come from” I now know that after the workers finish their morning tea they recycle their aluminum custard tart trays and convert them into Specialized Bikes. Lol

I want to meet QC #23 one day, I'd like to buy her/him a beer over a bowl of rice and fish.
