New Server!

In case you wonder why the little up/down yesterday. We are now on a new server, that looks a little something like this:

Being a nerd, I wrote some BS about it and posted pictures here:

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php...

For the record, parts are AMD 4850e, Geil 4GB DDR2 800 RAM (CAS5), Abit A78HD motherboard, 2x200GB 7200RPM SATA drives in RAID1. It's running CentOS 5.2 64 bit but I upgraded the kernel (stock is too old to support the Gb LAN on the motherboard) and built optimised for AMD server while doing so.

It's not yet connected to the UPS so there will be another slight outage sometime soon-ish when I move the power plug and test UPS functions properly.

Love the custom case! I'm sure that will stay cool, however won't it attract more dust the usual? But I guess that depends on the environment it lives in!

U might have to schedule a weekly dust off around all you're cycling?

nice case!
well done Rob and thanks for looking after the Mob so well!

Now Pikey... you shouldn't joke about things like that 'cos people might take you up on said offers Sticking out tongue

Let's say one needs a tiny refrigeration unit to cool something similar to a single server rack in size. Let's say 40x50x200cm. What can you do? Said unit should only kick in when ambient temp is > 30C and turn off when < 25C.

I'm thinking one could get one of those $30 coolers from DSE and chop a hole in the 'rack' placing the cooling element inside and heat generation gumf elsewhere. That or beg parts from an old fridge from an appliance repair shop and use them.

Recommendations from the cooling guru? Eye-wink

Refrigerated server. Are you trying to overclock this beast to be max or something!?

Rob's picture

LOL... no, no... never OC a system you intend to leave running for years on end. A little bit of A/C for when it's really hot in summer is all I'm really talking about.

Jee10's picture

Yes Pikey...I was going to take you up on that comment! I need something like that? So was that a joke?

It looks beautiful Smiling

It's great to have people like you around, who put time and effort into building and maintaining fantastic web sites like this one. What would we do without you????

Thanks - it's much appreciated!!!

Sorry 'bout that. Little up and down just now to test the UPS. Tricky little sucker to get right, especially if the power comes back once the system has decided it's time to go to sleep and return for... when the power comes back. Eye-wink

Suffice to say these are the magic lines in /etc/init.d/halt

# See if this is a powerfail situation.                               # ***apcupsd***
if [ -f /etc/apcupsd/powerfail ]; then                                # ***apcupsd***
   echo                                                               # ***apcupsd***
echo "APCUPSD will now power off the UPS"                          # ***apcupsd***
   echo                                                               # ***apcupsd***
   /etc/apcupsd/apccontrol killpower                                  # ***apcupsd***
   echo                                                               # ***apcupsd***
echo "Please ensure that the UPS has powered off before rebooting" # ***apcupsd***
echo "Otherwise, the UPS may cut the power during the reboot!!!"   # ***apcupsd***
   echo                                                               # ***apcupsd***
#
# RAR - hang on - if we are still here after telling the UPS to kill
# power it means that power returned while we were shutting down.
# Doh! OK - just restart. Erm... athough sleep 60 first because
# the UPS sometimes decides to kill power after quiet some time
# instead of when first told above.
#
echo "Power is still here!!! Let's sleep 60 then reboot"
  sleep 60
  echo "reboot..."
  /sbin/reboot
#
# RAR
#
fi                                                                    # ***apcupsd***

Nice case, will it be getting neon lights?

Rob's picture

Nah... it'll be living in a cupboard, no point putting lights in there.

Hans's picture

Hi Rob....

is this what your "server in a cupboard" looks like?

Here is an option for a Linux cluster server...in a modded IKEA cupboard...

C'mon, you wanna do it... Eye-wink

Nah - I've seen Helmer before. It's cool but we don't need that much power so plex is fine.

Pratiwi keeps asking when the data centre build will be complete, I'll ask the cable company. Will take some pictures of the setup when it's done Smiling
