Australia Day at Menai
By the sports field on Old Illawarra Road, Barden Ridge.
The start time may be early but everyone's keen to rise early and greet the day, right?
Setting off early to beat the heat, I'll lead us through some of my favourite sections of this increasingly popular trail system.
Everyone is welcome yet I've set a limit to avoid congestion and to prevent losing those who aren't familiar with the area. For those less experienced, some sections are pretty awkward but the most is good, solid and absolutely enjoyable riding.
We could very well be back at the cars by 10 so everyone can then go about their regular Australia Day. Wave that flag!
Were you there and have a story to tell?

Forget it
I'm keen to discover this trail. According to google it takes 1h to drive to there from the lower North Shore, but being so early it should probably take about 45mins? Anyway I'll be leaving at 6am
Tom
As much as I love this place
And just don't get there often enough
The start time means too early out of bed for old sleepy head
Maybe when things cool off a little we can start a bit later
I know the area very well and can maybe help with navigation.
usually when i go there i do a 22km loop which has some cool bits. I don't want to intrude though if your numbers are set.
Hate snakes though, so if its really hot and sunny, I will be scumming instead.
Benny
If someone won't make it, please let me know as I am keen to come along.
Cheerio.......Bart
Dropping out of the Menai ride (bit too early ) - been riding MD & BB today.
Have fun! We'll join you next time...

Not so much looking forward to getting up that early but should be good fun riding a new track. Hope you can make it next time.
Thanks for the spot!
Bart
New track? You will love Menai. It is one of the best rides in Sydney.
Hans. Thanks mate for the spot. I was going to ride Lake Parramatta alone at about the same time. Have a good sleep in.
Thanks to all attendees for a great morning. Tom, our only casualty, I hope you're feeling better mate. Tom got to know the trail intimately...
The only mechanical was experienced by me, when my rear mech, and the hanger, parted company with my bike. Thankfully, I was travelling with a spare tip and with a bit of bending, the RD came back to life.
Thanks to Spart for his very good impression of a workstand.
I have a hairline fracture of my radius big surprise considering that it was a typical OTB! Fortunately I do not have a cast so hopefully not out for too long. Thanks for showing me the way back to the car. Can't wait to get back on the saddle with some extra protection this time on new trails...
It's been quite a weekend after the Marramarra hell
Tom
Get well soon, mate. Head to your favourite shop and invest in armour and maybe even a full face. This is not overkill.
When I ride at Menai in the cooler months I often wear all my DH gear and ride the big stuff. Menai can be treacherous and I also get caught out and stack. I pretty much always wear my knee/shin armour, just in case...
Sorry to hear that Tom. Get repaired soon!
Sorry you had such a nasty fall and as the only witness, I'm glad you didn't come worse off! It was not nice to see. Hope to see you back in the saddle soon.
