When:
Saturday, 7 February, 2009 - 18:00
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Ride Database Entry:
The Oaks
Meeting Point:

Glenbrook station carpark.

-33.769197, 150.622262 (Glenbrook Station Carpark)
Details:

With this 24hr thing on the 14th and my current state of panic about my roid boy team I am planning to ride the Oaks up and back at twilight on Saturday 7th at about 6pm (like Paul did at Christmas). I am very hopeful that someone else will come along since I don’t really want to ride it on my own and would probably get lost, even though as we all know it’s an easy trail to find…
Anyway, it won’t be a super fast ride of course (most of the roidys are competing at Lithgow the next day) but a fun one. If you do come then please bring a beer for at the end – it’s about 55ks all up I think…

Who's in?
Bernd, christine, Paul, Nic, Damien, Slowpup, georgesadlik, Bikeboy (8 riders)
Bernd christine Paul Nic Damien Slowpup georgesadlik Bikeboy
What Happened?

Were you there and have a story to tell?

55kms ? Jeez ! The most i've ever done is about 35 in one go... I guess another 20 won't hurt, will it ?

Will we need lights for this ?

Cheers

George.

(p.s. I'm doing about 80kms off road a week at the moment, so i should be right for this one, i hope.)

I just did this ride on Saturday - now the trail has been graded it's an easy 55km
Just remember to keep a bit in reserve for the sniggle at the end and the climb out of the park and you'll be fine.

Enjoy

Stuart M's picture

Its a long slow climb up, allowing 2 to 2 1/2 hrs I think would be reasonable. That'll have you at the top gate around Dusk, if not a little later. You'll want a good two hr burn time for the trip back down as well.

Don't worry too much about the climbing, this ride averages out as dead flat Eye-wink

Sorted.

i also have a fridge in the back of my car to keep the beer cool, reserve your place now.

cheers

george.

"..this ride averages out as dead flat"

I can't think of too many out and backs that don't average out dead flat.

You've changed blondie! Sticking out tongue

There goes the economy

as IF - I am just simply being a panic stricken team member who is s*&T scared of Whisperers, and Junkies 'race faces' should I not pull my weight at the single lap they will allow me to do at the 24hr thing!
Lozza - i still trust you to drink with me at the Mont!!!

lozza6's picture

I'll get another case again Smiling

christine's picture

the world is back to right again!

Alysum's picture

Is this is actually a twilight/night ride? I would be interested if it's 100% twilight as I do not have lights. The sunset will be a bit earlier in February too.

Tom

christine's picture

as last time we finished a bit late... but night riding is sooo fun, see if you can borrow lights!!!

Yes lights are a must. There's no way you will get back before dark.

Anyone.... I listen to Abba, Peter Paul and Mary and talkback radio. Can also fit 4 MTB's in the back of the Lowlux.

Driving from Forestville area.

jdb's picture

carpool sounds like a great idea

Paul's picture

I'll probably give this a go. I'll consult my social secretary.

Hopefully it will be dry - I've done the Oaks up and back twice at night and both times it's rained during the ride.

delicious's picture

It's only 54km. And Christine is really good company when out on a ride. In the bush...when it's dark...

Buck's picture

She won't be such a happy lady when we head up from the gate to the helipad. All you will hear then is how hills have not been friendly to her Smiling

lozza6's picture

I've met Mr hills and I won't hear a bad word about him.

Friendliest bloke I know!

jdb's picture

I can't do this ride, forgot i've got a beer appreciation night to attend Smiling

ar_junkie's picture

That's every night!
Eye-wink

christine's picture

and hills will be so nice to me at this ride - not one grumble will pop out of my mouth (yeah right!)

Nic's picture

... I couldn't miss this one!!!

anke13's picture

Would love to come on this ride....could someone please lend me some lights?

Bernd's picture

I'm with Nic, I must go!

Third time might get lucky with the weather.

Bernd's picture

so, I do not think I could ride without glasses again!!!
Bernd

Damien's picture

Ok out again got to stick to my anti social training plan so will be doing this at a fast pace in the morning plus might add an hour of the stuff up at the top for a four hour training ride I have to get serious so I can ride and finish the solo at Easter.

Stuart M's picture

weather?

It'll be hot, damn hot, and then of course there is the chance of heavy lightening and thunder storms, typical of hot humid summer days

Let there be light

christine's picture

the prospect of flash floods, hail and possibly a tornado...

Buck's picture

Wouldn't it be funny if there was a flash flood on the way back down the Oaks. Then you get to the causeway and it's a raging river that you can't cross. Then you'd have to ride back up the Oaks for a second time to get out Sticking out tongue

Stuart M's picture

What I neglected to mention though was the number of spiders that'll be out, stretching and weaving their sticky little webs across all of the beautiful sniggle. Good chance we'll seem great "dance" moves on the way back down, pity I'll miss them from spot at the rear of the train

Let there be light

Paul's picture

A warm night will be a welcome change to the usual cold rainy nights I've experienced on the Oaks. It will also make the beer taste sooo good.

Stuart, I'm happy to clear the spiders but if your coming why don't you go first and fry them with that portable supernova of yours.

Stuart M's picture

but that will make for a very slow trip down the mountain for most of you.

Let there be light

Stuart M's picture

It's only been low 30's and look at those storm clouds roll in. Imagine what it'll be like when it's a low 40's day and you have the mountain weather thrown in.

Better bring a change of clothes and an umbrella

Let there be light

Damien's picture

I did the Oaks up and back at sparrow’s fart on Saturday and came across no spiders or webs at all as I rode up the single trail and I doubt anyone else had been through earlier than me.

Theres a very small chance I will be in for this ride at the last minute.

Paul's picture

too hot,
too cold,
too humid,
too wet,
too stormy,
too light,
too dark,
too late,
too long,
too scary,
too far,
too hilly,
too hard.

As well as the change of clothes and umbrella bring a beer to enjoy post ride.

lozza6's picture

TOO MUCH!

Colt's picture

Too right! Smiling

Flynny's picture

too easy!

Damien's picture

Too do two in one day why not I will come along so any one want to do the first run at 6.00am.

Colt's picture

6 am? My god the mans mad! Someone restrain him! Smiling

Col.

Damien's picture

Its the best time of day to ride the Oaks up and back as there is no one else around I can ride up the single track which is good fun without the worry of guys coming the other way.

I might do a road ride on Saturday morning instead though depends on what the boss and kids think.

Nic's picture

... perhaps we should refine the arrangement - Christine???

Maybe 6am would be a better time than 6pm? Surely not "too early"

Nic
