When:
Sunday, 1 February, 2009 - 08:30
Duration:
6 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it's raining, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
Great Northern Road
Meeting Point:

Wisemans Ferry - by the East ferry crossing. Park in front of the kiosk in Wiseman's Ferry Park.

-33.38142,150.989066 (Park by the Ferry)
Details:

65-70k (approx).

Ride from the ferry up Western Commission Track (WCT) to its junction with the Great North Road (GNR).
Turn right until we hit the junction of GNR / Donny's Track.
Take Donny's for a 15k (may be 20 - Bluray has the map!) loop back to Ten Mile Hollow, then back along the GNR all the way to, and down, Shepherd's Gully.
9k's along the gravel to completely finish us off followed by the obligatory VERY dodgy pie at the greasy spoon (kiosk). Ian, are you still alive mate?

This is a fantastic area which has everything - technical, distance, fun descent, hellish climb, and 15-20k's of the unknown on this ride (for me anyway-I haven't done the extra loop).

Whilst I've put this up as a social ride rather than training, if you struggle with the early WCT climb you will suffer the rest of the way round - you've only done 10k's by then. If you want to have a look at the GNR but are not confident about doing the longer distance it might be worth putting up a shorter ride (contact me - I can give you ideas for anything from 30 to 50k's of riding, taking in all of the good stuff). We can maybe start at the same time and & see who feels like what at the junction.

Hmmmmm. By Donnys track - you mean the one that runs to Mangrove Mountain pumping station? Nice fast firetrail, but slow climb out?

Have commitments in the area this weekend but would love to join this ride. Will confirm soon-ish I hope.

Morgan's picture

Not sure - Bluray mentioned the loop last weekend & he's got the map. He did mention some decent climbing though, so it's probably the same one. Bluray.....?

if we go down donny's track from the junction after clare's bridge the climb out up simpsons track isn't too bad, but if we do it vice versa the climb up donny's track could be a little difficult for some. (me included)

& no serious symptoms. Finchs line is good to throw in there too. walk the good bits though.

Hi, see you there ..

Very much alive & partied on till 2.00am that night, thus the pies get a thumbs up from me. Ride full at the momment but would like to have a crack at the extra loop.

I know how we all like talking about the weather way before the ride Eye-wink. It looks like mid thirtys for this one.

Morgan, as I have no idea where you are talking about for this one, are there any potential water stops?

Morgan's picture

Ommmmmmmmm, well there is one but it's a bit dodge - the only time I've stopped there it was empty (it's a small water tank that Buddhist monks put out on the track for walkers outside their retreat).

If it's too hot we'll cut down the ride accordingly, but bring at least 3 litres........

Carlgroover's picture

If the water tank is empty then couldn't you politely ask them for some water? As Buddhists shouldn't they be only too happy to help someone in need? Oh that's right, that wasn't their attitude when I once asked for water on a hot day before they had the tank out the front. I really think they have a way to go in learning their Buddhist culture as the others I've met are the friendliest and most helpful people you will find.
John.

This is an example of the irony and hipocrasy of religion, and those that practice it.
Not all though. Once again, the few spoil it for the many.

Brian's picture

Thanks Morgan. I'll have 4ltrs in the back pack and a bottle on the bike.

Paul's picture

I'm can't make this now so there is a spot available.

Brian's picture

I'm going to have to give this one a miss Sad. Getting out on the roadie after a long break has caused my sit bones to become quite tender so 6 hours in the saddle is probably not the best thing right now.

Hanno's picture

I said I'd like a shot at the extra loop but will have to wait for the next ride. I have a mates bucks night & no real chance of an 8.30 start, have a pie for me.

Noel's picture

There was water in the tank last week.

A sign at the Buddhist's place says "Visitors Welcome" so I think you could ask if it's empty.

Take lots of water anyways. We were lucky with a coolish day.
