Would/do you ride in the rain (track sustainability notwithstanding)?

I'm from Alaska. It would take a hungry 2 ton polar bear blocking my front door to stop me from having a ride.

I'm from England. If I didn't ride in the rain I wouldn't ride at all.

I'm from Sydney's North Shore. There was 1mm of drizzle yesterday so let's have a 6 hr debate before making a hasty decision.

And I also have a road bike. If it's raining, I'll just ride that instead. I cannot possibly damage the road by riding upon it whilst wet, surely?

As a full on bike-a-holic these days I love to ride in all sorts of weather conditions, as long as it's not too hot or too cold or too dusty or too wet or windy or too early or too late.

When the weather turns dull and wet I usually hit up my fav Narrabeen Lake loop.

If I find it too wet and slippery when I get over there then I just slip into Gloria Jeans for a weak de-caf skim milk latte and maybe a friand. That warms me up and fills a hole.

May your wheels be true and your stroke smooth.

north of england and used to be hard as nails and ride mountain and road in snow and ice. Now i live on the north shore and i'm soft as sh..te! I ride my permanently fixed road bike on wind trainer in front of the tv in my bedroom but go out on the road after the rain stops. Road bikes are a dream to maintain. Mountain bikes are a bloody pain! ( but i still love them)

How does Kath put up with you grinding away in the bedroom while watching TV?

Is she awake or does she sleep through it?

GAZZA's picture

i have a habit of putting women to sleep i'm afraid!

riding in the uk was only in dodgy weather; have got a tad softer these days though. nowadays mostly ride in any weather, but dont want to start in the rain Sad

stay away from standing water as removing bits to clean/degunk gets a pain.....

only real bummer is real hot weather...not good !

My first mountain bike race was 20 years ago near Greenock , a town to the West of Glasgow. It is well known for being the wettest town in Scotland. The race was part of the 'West of Scotland Winter Series'. I'll leave it to your imagination to conjour up a mental picture of the weather conditions.... Riding off road in horizontal sleet is something everyone should try ( once...). My favoutite article of clothing was a pair of neoprene long fingered divers gloves. They kept your fingers working but the smell was absoutely overpowering! You never really worried about the weather, you just assumed it would be raining and got on the bike anyway. Rebuilding hubs and bottom brackets was a weekly occurance....

I'm still pretty ropey on rocks and loose dry stuff, but used to be pretty good on wet roots and shin deep mud...

Can't say I'm getting nostalgic or homesick in the slightest though.

What's that big bright yellow thing up in the sky ....?

If I had an infinite supply of $$$$$ I would ride rain hail or snow. The only reason not to is that mud etc is SO hard on your bike parts especially pads and drivetrain.

Cmon, who doesn't like riding through puddles!

Yes, I shudder when I think of sleet, snow, etc. Was in Loughborough and Warwick so not so bad. Coming out of digs to be greeted by a foot of snow made one think twice about the lecture you had to get to...shame I made it to most... My most treasured possesions were skiing gloves for the outer and a balaclava and a dri change in the backpack Sad Most feared was black ice on my road bike ! Have not owned a road bike since !

Drove through your neck of the woods once on the way to aberdeen...i remember sliding around corners on some B roads with full opposite lock in a rented car and using the snow banks as a 'guide'...'twas more interesting out there cos we could go looking for roads that had not been cleared.....heh heh them were the days....still remember coming back through a blizard and pulling over to inside lane as we could not see at all to be passed by the proverbial sales rep at warp speed...pulled off at the enxt exit and waited till it cleared as even for me in those day, that was too scary ! .... aaaaah nostalgia.....
i digress

We started about 1:45pm and rode Duck Holes, Elvina, Warratah, Centre Track.

Really nice conditions! Tiny bit of drizzle on the way back, but it was all good.
