The Oaks - noob ride

By craigs - Posted on 24 February 2009

When:
Saturday, 7 March, 2009 - 08:00
Duration:
4 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it's raining, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
The Oaks
Meeting Point:

Glenbrook station carpark.

-33.769197, 150.622262 (Glenbrook Station Carpark)
Details:

The work colleagues have got their act together and will finally make an appearance!

This will be casual paced and suitable for less experienced or less fit riders who are wanting to "do the oaks". All are welcome of course. We will pace it by the group consensus and regroup as necessary.
It's approx 30Km of mostly fire trail with an excellent single trail at the end and of course a very very testing hill riding out back to the car park.

We catch the train from Glenbrook (8:23) up to Woodford (8:54)and ride back to the carpark. Train ticket is required so bring a few $$$.
Bring plently of water, sunscreen, spares and food to get through.

****IF ANYONE IS KEEN TO DO UP AND BACK LET ME KNOW**** I have a need for training so might be inclined to ride up and meet the train at Woodford.
Oh, as the ride organiser I will ensure that we have the logistics in place beforehand to ensure that everyone meets up to get the train. If there are any issues, the up and back for me will revert to one way.
I have a couple of confirmed for the train.

I am conscious of the weather, not so much rain but heat and fire risk, so will be monitoring closer to the day.

Top idea Craig Smiling

Think Pratiwi is keen for this. Although I am also keen to ride up. Not sure the logistics would work in this scenario so might have to make do with a one way trip.

anke13's picture

Craigs, I'm with you. Need to do some training on the mtb bike.
Cheers
Anke

i guess - only for up and back - good lord! i can't believe i just wrote that - this is getting sick..

craigs's picture

Robbie what are you doing?? Click the yes box!!

christine's picture

it seems our mont team is having a 'thing' that morning so I will need to be there for that...
now, where is that whiteboard... Smiling

dangersean's picture

I am in for an up and back. Is this still the plan for others?

Although this is my first time at Oaks, I still want to rack up some km's

craigs's picture

The up and back is probable.
It depends on how the planning goes. The usual one way ride from Woodford for the noob's is a definate starter.
Will kick off the up at 6:50 or so to meet the train at Woodford if it goes ahead.
Craig

anke13's picture

Craig and I are defintiely doing the up and back. The rough plan at this stage is to meet in Glenbrook just before 7am. We'll meet the rest of the group in Woodford around 9am. We'll be riding with minimal stops.

Craig will confirm the details closer to the weekend.

Cheers
Anke

For me an up and back is out due to bad logistics. Plus I'm racing the next day so want an easy ride. Plus my other noobie friend is now out so will see if Pratiwi still wants to do this.

That aside - I'd suggest a 7:15-ish (Anke says) 7am start to meet the noobs at 9-ish at the gate. The noobs will always collect you on the way down anyhow where you can discuss options on meeting.

Why doesn't someone post an 'up prior to noobs' ride to see who's going both ways?

To be honest I can't imagine you will want to ride at a noobs pace back anyhow but see how things go.

dangersean's picture

Will see how I go for time when I finish work tonight and maybe post a pre ride to meet the noobs. Not sure if i want that responsibility though Eye-wink
Either way, if others will be ready to ride up at 7am, then I will see you there.
cheers,
Sean.

craigs's picture

It's a noob ride from Woodford to Glenbrook as posted so the pace will be set by the noob group.
But as I will probably only have 2 guys from work coming on the noob part, they will meet us a Woodford so a small few of us (who have indicated) can also do the up to make it a bit more challenging.
Sean its up to you if you want to punch out 60Km, 30Km up the oaks at a good pace and 30km back at casual pace.
Let me know which part you are in for.

Craig

christine's picture

watch out offering him a 'good pace' from what i have heard he's a bit of a roid boy!

dangersean's picture

Craig that sounds perfect, a good pace for 30km, followed by a casual 30km back with smiles and banter.. cant ask for more in a ride IMO.

craigs's picture

Yeah we rode together at the weekend. Anyway, whats wrong with my good pace?

I meant to add in the previous post (cant edit) that Hans too, will be joining us at Glenbrook.

Will be funnnn

AJ-XC's picture

Hi Craig,

I'll meet you guys at Woodford. Not exactly a noob, but my first ride at the oaks, so I'll take it easy for this one.

Andrew

craigs's picture

New to the Oaks is fine.
Will you be at the station or the trailhead so we know where to look out for you or you us?

Craig

Rob's picture

Ah, sorry - as mentioned before my noob friend can't make it and now a change of plan for the weekend means Pratiwi & I are out too.

Doh! Sorry.

darkmuncan's picture

The Oaks is always fun, So Im in for the down trip only.

Ill have a spare seat in the ute coming from Mona Vale if anyone needs a lift.

LOOK FORWARD TO IT! (First nobmob ride)

I dont ride my bike, my bike rides me... we are currently in counseling...

AJ-XC's picture

I would prefer the station as I don't know where the trailhead is.
But if everyone is meeting at the trailhead, then a few directions and I am sure I can find it.

Danielvn's picture

I'm in for an up and back. Where are you meeting?

dangersean's picture

So, just confirming we are departing Glenbrook at 6.50am to ride up to Woodford?

cheers,
Sean.

craigs's picture

Sean, yes 6:50 for the ride up

Darkmuncan, how you gonna get your car if you meet us at the trailhead at Woodford and ride back to Glenbrook?

Danielvn, meeting spot is at Glenbrook station carpark. Details are at the top of this ride posting.

AJ-XC no worries station at Woodford is fine. Follow the bikers out to the road and look for Nobmob jersey's.

Please note, if you are catching the train from Glenbrook remember you will meet us at Woodford Station where we will group up and ride the Oaks back to Glenbrook.
We that are riding up will be outside the station to meet the train, and cars etc.

Craig

darkmuncan's picture

Hi Craig,

I was going to meet you at trailhead, but looks like itll be easier for everyone if I just locate a nobmob jersey wearer outside the station (assume top of the stairs on the road) and introduce Myself.

Ill be parking at Glenbrook and getting the 8:23 train.

Craig, Anke, Dangersean, Danielvn, AJ-XC meeting the train at Woodford

If you arent on the train, we wont be able to wait for the next one.

Carlgroover's picture

I'll see at the Woodford station in the morning and Mitchell my young fella will be coming also, it's rare to get him off the BMX these days.

Checkmate's picture

Hi Guys!
last minute sign in as always. I did The Oaks years back when I had no clue I'll end up on MTB bike twice a week. So, it's fair to say I'm new to this trail too.
I'm a bit confused about the whole up&down maybe / maybe not thing. Is it leaving the cars in Glenbrook, catching a train to Woodford, riding the trail down to Glenbrook, turning around, riding up to Woodford? Whoops, isn't my car still in Glenbrook? John, if you are still awake, could you clear this up for me? Chears .... Tony .

Nic's picture

Leaving the car at Glenbrook station, and either:

Option 1. Catching the train up to Woodford
OR
Option 2. Riding up to Woodford (meeting those who have taken the train)

From Woodford, everyone rides down to Glenbrook (and back to the cars)

Seeing as the train is (a bit quicker) than riding up, you need to leave earlier for Option 2.

Nic

Nic's picture

... and riding down is pretty much the reverse.

Carlgroover's picture

The original plan was to just ride down so for that you meet around 8am at Glenbrook and catch the train up to Woodford.
For the fitter crew you can also ride up, so park at Glenbrook and ride up the Oaks at 6.50am and meet the rest of us at Woodford station for the ride down Smiling
John.

Checkmate's picture

I get it, thanks. I'll see what time I manage to wake up. If I'm not there (Glenbrook carpark) at 6.50am, don't wait for me, I'll catch up with the rest in Woodford. Thanks and see yus tomorrow! .... Tony .

darkmuncan's picture

Im still at the office @ midnight trying to resolve something

The private life of a regional IT person does suck sometimes.

Ill SMS AJ-XC (Andrew) approx 8:30am if I am not on the 8:23am train, and wont make it. (only Nobmobber going I have mobile details for)

If all goes well I shall see everyone in the morning, if not, itll be next time.

Mark

Craig et al

Benji and I will meet you at the Woodford station, too.

DD will give us a lift there and meet us after at Euroka clearing....Eye-wink

Cheers, Hans

Thanks for a great Oaks ride!

Nice (and early) start to the day Sad ...I had to get the whole family out of bed at 6 am. Eye-wink.

Having Mr Carlgroover and his fast offspring Mitchell joining us at Woodford station made it clear that we had to add approx 20 kph to the overall pace... Eye-wink

A great day was had by all., despite some dramatic stacks - Anke on the way up, one of Craig's colleagues (?) on the way down in a dramatic high-speed somersault stunt, and some minor mechanicals (Tony's chain),

Benji and I were glad that we had our support vehicle (Mum's Tarago) picking us up "just before the big climb out"...and supplying us with fresh pretzels and other goodies from the German bakery in Wentworth Falls. (We continued to "Euroka clearing" for a nice picnic and kangaroo watching later that morning.)

Cheers, Hans

P.S. John - this is the "wheel in the tree" landmark I was visiting on a little side trip.

I've read about it in the Fat Hippy's blog http://www.users.on.net/~fathers/oaks.htm
