Hawkeye off the bike for awhile...

Hi guys. Looks like I'm off the bike for at least a month. I spent an entertaining evening in Manly hospital's A&E last night after doing a digger just past the Manly Dam trail's 19th Hole, dislocating my left shoulder.

The frustrating thing is it was a bit of trail I've ridden dozens of times that's hardly what you'd call technical. I got a bit off line, ran over a rock, dropped the wheel down the other side and - bang - over I went. Landed hard on the back of the left shoulder with a sickening crunch. I'm thinking maybe I tensed up and inadvertently grabbed some front brake.

Anyone done similar? How long before you could contemplate a return to to riding?

This is bad news mate. But yes, your not the only one, but I was lucky. I had a similar sort of thing at the cascades ride the other night.... 2 minutes in. Was following Tien down the first stretch when we got suprised by a big patch of water just after a blind sandy corner. We both hit the anchors but my wheels locked up and in the sand the wheels just went out sideways from under me. Like you I went over and landed on the shoulder, but mine was the right. Thankfully I'd decided to throw my core saver vest on under my jersey, just in case..... otherwise I could have been in the same boat as yourself. As is I've got a nicely bruised collar bone and it hurts a bit, but obviously I was a lot luckier than yourself.

Hope you heal up soon mate. Did you ask the docs how long they reckon before you should start riding again?

Col.

Glad you escaped anything worse! Smiling

Prognosis at this stage appears to be 4 weeks in a sling and then several weeks of physio strengthening up the supporting muscles. Being on the wrong side of 45 may stretch that out longer, as may the severity of the injury - X-rays were fine but they don't show up the soft tissue damage. This is from reading on the interwebby. I'll be making an appointment to see an orthopedic doctor in the next couple of days.

The lesson I suppose is that I need to ride further within my limits. Man, I'm pissed off with myself at the moment. Once I'm back on the bike I'm gonna be booking an AMBC course for sure. I'm too old for this crap. Sad

My sympathies Hawkeye, it's no fun at all.

I broke my collar bone and finger in a crash 2 weeks ago, plates inserted in both. I've been told I'm off the MTB for 3 to 4 months. No surfing or swimming either. At the moment I'm reduced to daily walks and I get to ride the road bike in 2 weeks. On the whole it's boring and the worst time of year for an injury.

All the best with your recovery.
