durable chainrings
My middle chainring is looking very worn, ( truvativ alloy stylo about 4 months old ) I blame this on the sand and lots of puddles up Red Hill.. anyhow I have ordered a new crankset after a rock attacked my bike and destroyed the large chainring last sunday, while its all apart i was thinking of putting in a more durable middle ring, this brings me to the subject;
Looking around the interweb, I see lots of conflicting info on steel V alloy chainrings, soooo does anyone have a good practical/experienced view on the most durable middle chainring?

The latest XT Alloy middle rings are nice and light, they have a steel outer (I think) or at least a coating which seems to last longer than the cheese rings from a couple of years ago.
How often do you use the granny gear, one sugestion is to forgo the granny and go a light bash guard.

I wear out about 3 middle rings a year.
I've been using XT alloy on my XT crankset for racing, and now moved to the 'new' XT with steel and carbon/composite middle ring. It's holding up better, but it is wearing noticeably after only 6 months.
On my general trailbike I use deore steel middle and small rings on an older XT crankset. These have lasted over a year now, and are not not so prone to chainsuck in really bad conditions like the alloy ones. There's a bit of extra weight, but worth it for the longevity.
but the more you ride... they all just wear out, like chains, sad but true.
its gotten to the point that i take an extra drink bottle on a ride so i can wash the sand off the gearset when i can and ride super slow through puddles..
So apart from the extra weight ( cant be that much ) a steel middle ring would last longer? whats not to like about that? but i would guess the chain might wear faster if the chainring was tougher?
Its back to the interweb to find steel middle ring for truvativ 4 bolt..
