New Bike Computer
I lost my bike computer over the weekend
I really should know better than opening this can of worms, but can anyone recommend one that isn't likely to ping off my bike when I huck a jump? In particular features I am looking for: wireless, heart rate monitor, informative display, good resistance to cross talk and interference, water resistant and all of the usual cycle functions (cadence not required).
The Edge looks great but is quite pricey and looks as if it could bounce around a lot unless you weld it on.

The Edge doesn't move at all on my bikes, but it doesn't have HRM on the 205 which means the 305 is the way to go. Personally I don't always use a HRM so I have a separate one that I wear as needed but can also use for running etc. Other than that it's a great device but it takes a bit of research. Out of the box it's only useful to record rides and compete against yourself on the same track next time (you can store multiple tracks easily), but if you use it with free sites like GPSies.com or now the new Google Earth you can import other peoples rides and follow them yourself.
Ascent is also a great software tool to monitor your performance, record rides and see progress plus it has a whole heap of info about each ride to analyse (you can tell from that description I don't do much of that)!
Anyway, Polar make a very good bike computer that does everything but the GPS, but it's close the the same money from memory so I ended up with the Edge and taken it on pretty harsh trails with no problems.
Thanks Heeza
Here is a question you probably weren't expecting. Have you ever tried geocaching on the edge? It's another of my past times
Given that I'd never heard of it, the answer is no, however looking it up I see no reason why not as it's easy to download waypoints etc to navigate to, so in theory should be doable.....
Polar 200 should do what you require, I've been using the CS200 with cadence for the last 2, 100km marathons and havn't been able to ping
it yet. Also have had a Sigma wireless computer for nearly 10 years with no problems. The new digital versions are better but you pay more.
I have the Suunto t3c watch and a bike pod. watch fits on the bars whilst
riding or racing, or wrist if doing day to day stuff.
They have a running foot pod and a GPS pod as well but I'm not familiar with those.
100 percent reliable and if you buy the pc pod you can download all your stuff onto your computer and see an incredible amount of info. p.s. bike pod is not cadence pod(which is also referred to as road pod).
If your interested in a demo we can do a manly ride one of these days and you can have a look see. Darren.
While it's true that Edge mounts suck you can easily make a nice protective case for couple bucks to keep it on the bike.
And now we know how to stop them turning off all good
Garmin have some very nice looking wrist computers which you would mount using pipe insulation on the bars, but sadly not with barometric altimeter at the mo.
Dylan, while my Gu container, drink bottle, false teeth and tattoos all got shaken loose at the DW my Garmin Edge held tight and working flawlessly.
I've had plenty of other computers and not having to rely on a sensor in the wheel communicating to the computer to measure distance, speed, etc is a blessing.
The 705 comes with a HR monitor and cadence sensors can be bought seperately.
Have had a 305 for a couple of years now. Never had a problem with it ever coming off. Smacked a 'jumping out tree' once fairly hard and te only damage was a broken mount. Once I found the unit, appears it even survived another rider running over the unit...just a wee scratch on face... Only required a new mount.
Garmin software is not crash hot but ascent works really well.
One issue I had was that it refused to turn on once....needed the usb connector and a seq of key presses to reset (forget now).
I do know one person who has had an issue with the buttons on hers. However, this appears to be a fairly well documented issue and it appears garmin will warranty it.
HR and Cadence kits work real well too. Only issue with HR sometimes is that it requires 'sweat' to get a good reading...so sometimes goes south Like at the mont in the night ... guess I need to try harder
It appears the newer units have more gps functions and color screens. Dont use gps functions as it seems pointless to me. YMMV.
Overall very happy with mine and have not had the usual urge to upgrade

So many people have these edge things I really need to check one out. Next time I am on the ride with someone I'll have to have a play. They are so pricey though....

About the Edge 305:
Does the unit ever loose signal in the woods (e.g. Ourimbah, yellomundi?)
What's this I hear about them turning off.. has that been fixed now?
Could anyone let me play with theirs for a few hours?
Cheers
The signal reception is pretty good at Ourimbah, etc. It's worse in the City if you'd believe it.
As for it turning off... we know how to fix that

Or the less extreme edition:

Did not loose the signal at sparrow even though i would have expected to. Overall not had a problem with loosing signals.
Yep, you can check my 305 out.
already have the eTrex Vista, tracked the Manly Dam a treat, looks good in the KML
the eTrex handlebar mount is excellent, slides in and clips, plus the wrist strap hooks to the handlebars
would like HRM and cadence too, because it can and garmin connect (or something) can show it
