Trance X1 - Drive Train exchange

Hi guys, looking for a good advice, please.
I lost a couple teeth on my mid-ring. Also, there is quite a bit of wear on a cassette and I broke my chain twice.
It's Giant Trance X1 2008, purchased late July 08. Does it make sense it's just about time to replace a few parts?
I would like to have the same or at least the same quality parts installed. What I need is cassette, chain rings and chain itself at least. How would you go about it?
I made a couple of phone calls and it seems they have to order all stuff in anyway.
What would be a smart way to go about it to keep the cost down? Can you recommend anything? THANKS!

Depends how much you ride, but you don't mention chain replacement so assume you've been riding the last year (and quiet a bit at that) on the same chain, rings, etc.

This probably means you've stretched the chain over the magic 0.75% wear limit and you won't get a new chain to mesh with the rings and cassette now so need a whole set. This means you might as well ride the whole lot into the ground until the jumping or skipping becomes too bad and then replace the whole lot.

What I do is keep and eye out for specials at the LBS and beyond and pick up parts when they are very cheap. Depending on how much you ride and the conditions you have to replace this stuff regularly (chains 2-3 a year), rings/cassette 1 year to 18 months if you're lucky, etc. so it's always useful to pick up in this way. There are some massive bargains to be had at times so you can pick up stuff cheaply and have it on hand when replacement is needed.

Sorry, that doesn't help you know. Sad Unless you can ride on for a while while you search out said bargains.

Yeah, I think I'm there. The chain keeps skipping even on a flat ground when it's not loaded much. Forget riding uphill.
Anyone knows what chain rings are originally on Trance X1?

Evolve XC are the rings and crankset on a X1 2008 (I have one). I got the middle ring replaced with a shimano one after 6 months (they can mix).

Thanks Tom.
Is there a huge difference (apart from $20) between Shimano LX HG-73 and Shimano HG-93 chains?

Have a look at torpedo7, tbsm, crc, ebay and the like. They sell components at way better prices than local bike shops. For good quality and reliability you can't go past a Shimano XT drivetrain (cassette and chain rings), although sram's casettes are cheaper. I thinks it's worth it to get the XTR Dura-Ace chain, if you find it on special you can get one for less than $40 and it's totally worth it, But also get a SRAM gold powerlink (about $5), cos it makes it so much easier to join the chain. The shimano chains are stong and light (way better than SRAM chains). If you are capable of installing it yourself, you'll definitely save alot as wel.

this recent thread about chains and differences XT/XTR http://nobmob.com/node/9059 - go for the XTR/Dura Ace whenever on special at T7 Smiling
