Note that this ride is Cancelled.
When:
Wednesday, 17 June, 2009 - 20:00
Duration:
1 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it has rained on this trail today, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
Manly Dam
Meeting Point:

King Street (near corner with Arana Street), Manly Vale. You know - outside Manly Hydraulics Lab.

-33.781501, 151.258115 (Manly Hydraulics Lab)
Details:

I want to get out on my bike at night again so I am off to one of my favourites for a night ride Manly so any one else up for a fun ride around the dam at night.

This is the one for you if you are short on time and have to start a little later and aren’t fused about hanging around at the pub afterwards. So starting a little later than the usual I should be ready to go at 8.00pm for a moderately paced fun social lap I like to keep it simple on Wednesday nights so the normal loop is the go but I can be flexible and if others want to take some detours then I will follow no problem.

Ok its Manly so its technical and its dark so you really do need to know what you are doing and have a good set of lights to come on this ride. The pace will generally be fairly moderate but not too quick but being dark you will need a bit of night riding experience to handle the challenges that the dam has on offer and it would be best if you have ridden there in the day and no what to expect.

I wanted to post this ride for this week but due to the rain and wet conditions this ride will happen NEXT WEEK the 3rd of June so the Dam has a chance to dry out.

Went and had a look this morning and the dam is looking ok so looking good for Wednesday.

As this ride has been postponed a couple of times if you are not coming along please clear your name from the list.

Just a reminder to all the eager riders signed up for this I know you are all on the ball and checked when this one is actually on but just in case.

THIS RIDE IS POSTED FOR NEXT WEEK AFTER THE DAM HAS HAD A GOOD CHANCE TO DRY OUT.

christine's picture

any of them are new and didn't know yet.. we usually each bring a beer along to have after the ride ... Smiling

Damien's picture

Its an 8.00pm Start not 7.30pm.

Will bring a ginger beer.

Damien's picture

I am thinking it might be better to postpone this another week as it seems the Dam is not in great condition at the moment.

Postpone YES or NO I am not keen to ride Manly Dam untill it has had a good chance to dry out what does everyone think.

dangersean's picture

I agree Damien

Maybe another week to dry out?

Besides, State of Origin is on. Come on you blues!

MDOldFart's picture

Definitely postpone for a week mate, then I can join you as well Eye-wink

christine's picture

with those two!

Damien's picture

Postponed for a week.

Hopefully the Dam will dry out.

SEE YOU ALL ON THE 10th - 8.00pm.

a.brasington's picture

Give me another week on top of that, and a light, and I am all for it! >.<

Damien's picture

The dam is currently closed and at a guess will probably still be closed on Wednesday which is almost beside the point anyway as I doubt it will be ready for 20 odd riders to hit it up by Wednesday night so I am thinking of waiting another week for it to dry out before doing this ride.

I know there are some itchy feet out there but what do we all think.

pikey's picture

Sigh!

Gus's picture

Just got some Ay-Ups and supper keen to get my fix with a night lap of the dam. Pleeease can i tag along, I'll bring a 6pack or a case if necessary for bribes.

Slowpup's picture

If the Dam is still out of shape on Wednesday is anyone up for a lap of Duckholes and Center instead? That should be dry enough and not too drivetrain hungry.

This should have gone in tentative planning.....

Colt's picture

So was the Dam closed tonight, or did the ride go ahead? I'm especially curious as my friend is booked into a Wobblies AMBC course being held at the dam this Saturday, and I'm wondering what will happen if the track is shut.....

unicycle6869's picture

Just curious as to how long your lap will take (as in what time do you think you guys will be finished)?

Damien's picture

Not sure at a guess an hour or so would be a really social lap time but it will probably be a litle bit quicker than that but could be longer if its a really social slow one. Also depends on which way we go it will probably be a standard lap but thats not set in stone.

unicycle6869's picture

OK, thanks. Just wondering if I could keep up as I'd be on a muni (mt unicycle). Did 2 laps today and first was 1 hour 5 minutes, second just under an hour. But that's in the day pretty much going all out for me. I'm buying a 26" wheel (instead of my 24") and shorter cranks to try and do faster laps but won't have that machine for a few weeks. I might show up a half an hour before you guys and give it a try so you guys catch up to me somewhere along the end of the trail to have a beer or two at the finish, that is if you're willing to take a one-wheeler into the group. BTW-Don't worry, I hate clowns too.

Hans's picture

MTB unicycle at night at Manly Dam...?

I wished I could see that...where do you attach the second set of Ay-ups - between your legs? Eye-wink

Because we don't need to use our hands for the handlebars, I can carry a bright flashlight in one hand and use the other hand for my handle attached to the seat! Eye-wink Haven't done Manly Dam at night yet, so it'd be great with a group especially for safety. During the day I can do the loop with 2-5 falls but I'm sure it'll increase at night...

pikey's picture

Hey unicycle6869

You have to turn up Wednesday, as Hans said we ALL want to meet you and as for your lap time...with the amount of social stops we have you will propbabaly beat us Eye-wink

See you at 7:30

Wow, I wish I could come along just to see this. Would be great to have a unicycle in the group.

unicycle6869's picture

Cool, I'll try to make it!

THREADJACK:
As I didn't bring my light from the US, I am in need of one. Preferably a good quality low price (kind of an oxymoron...I know) but if anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate it. Will go shopping Tuesday or Wednesday and don't even know the best bike shops around the area (I live in Mosman). Thanks in advance for any help!

END THREADJACK

Slowpup's picture

I can lend you an Ay-Up if that helps.

Nick.

pikey's picture

I recommend since you have one hand free Eye-wink

Pikey

unicycle6869's picture

Slowpup, that'd be great if I could borrow your Ay-Up. Just checked out there website and am close to buying one but it'd be awesome to test one out first. What would I need to mount it on my helmet, just some tie wraps? And if you could show up a little earlier so I can get on the trail before everyone else, that'd be great. I'll be there ready to ride around 7:30pm so whenever you get there I'll attach it and off I go...And it goes without saying but of course if anything happens to it, I promise to replace it.

Slowpup's picture

I'll do my best to be there by 7:30.

I'll bring some velcro straps, otherwise a zip tie or two will do it.

Not one to mention the weather....., but it is persisting down outside my window right now? mutter mutter *&%^$!

ar_junkie's picture

It has been raining off and on this morning, although the sun does look like its starting to come out...

GAZZA's picture

around terrey hills after my road ride this morning with steve01. i've been trying to pike out but steve is insistent! bugger!!!

Buck's picture

Is this going to be a permanently postponed Manly night ride!? Looks very wet on the weather radars

Damien's picture

What can you do I think I will cancel it and let someone else with better luck post a ride.

GAZZA's picture

should you all just meet up and go for a road ride like i just did with steve. it was peeing down and i never ruined any trails whatsoever! you're all whinging about not being able to ride your bikes when there's millions of km's of dirt free bitumen right at your feet!!!! Eye-wink
on a serious note, if anyone wants to join me on a mtb, bitumen hillfest round balmoral tomorrow night then i can take you on my usual midweek training route. it's suprisingly quiet on the streets that i use and great fun(for city riding anyway)
let me know if you're interested as i'll be going anyway and wont be put off by any stupid rain!

christine's picture

I think you are seriously confused as to where you just put that post..
In case you have forgotten...this is a MOUNTAIN BIKE riding site, which would, i supect, elude to the fact we like to ride mountain bikes, which happens, as a general rule, to my understanding... off road...

LadyToast's picture

What time? Where? How far? How much neoprene?

GAZZA's picture

i'll be flexible with time for one night only for all you shirt and tie wearing mortals that work into the night! normal loop is around 25km done in about an hour and a half. can do more if your not ready for home after awaba street? wear enough neoprene to make a diver jealous! i'll wait for more interest and feedback before posting a ride. christine, if all you staunch mtb'ers only ever rode on dirt when it was dry then you'd all be a little overweight and frustrated wouldn't you? part of the enjoyment of mountainbiking is getting out there and getting the heart rate up. i assure you that this ride will!
oh, and by the way. granny gears are not allowed on this ride! middle and the big dog only!!!!

christine's picture

just because you don't ride your mtb in the wet doesn't mean some of us do.. I seem to recall i did the Sydney 24hr in pouring rain and was at the Blue Mountains with you guys...
Watch out for dylan - total roid boy...

LadyToast's picture

I'm keen but I wouldn't be able to get down to Balmoral by any decent time.

Now if you fancied something like Akuna bay, west head etc.....

GAZZA's picture

been there today. will stay closer to home tomorrow night though. maybe a ride for a wet weekend sometime?

Chris S's picture

I’m going to bail out now from tomorrows ride as it looks like it’s not going to happen due to the wet weather.

I rode at Menai Monday evening and it was relatively dry, if it doesn’t rain continuously tomorrow I think it will be rideable tomorrow evening.

If anyone wants to join me for an hour to an hour and a half, let me know. I’ll be staying clear of the technical stuff and riding a XC loop.

LadyToast's picture

Sounds good, lets play it by ear according to precipitation.

Bikeboy's picture

But i may be a little tired from riding Sparrow hill for two hours tonight ( May even be riding Majura tomorrow anyway) and my brownie point quota is in negative so i am afraid it will have to be next time

Appin would be rather appealing in the not too distant future though

How did i get here ?

Whisperer's picture

Agree Gazza, haven't been able to get out on the trails for a while, and I'm doing plenty of road stuff too.
105km on the single speed a week ago - the 4 gorges with Dons mates on their road bikes (Galston, Berowra, Brooklyn, Bobbin)
Out there this morning too, not-so-bright and early, Terry Hills in the misting to pi$$ing rain, 50km on the way to work, 15km on the way home.
Got the nice-clean-rebuilt-scummer dirty, but heck it's there to ride. Agree, no damage to the trails, and keepin nice and fit.
Plenty of challenge keeping upright on 23mm tyres at 120psi down the twisty descents.
Soon as the trails dry out though - I'll be baaaaaack out there!
Look forward to the Balmoral hills with you sometime but another week mate.

linco's picture

Hi Gazza. I think a road ride sounds good. Let me know when and where. I work at Balmoral so i'll take my bike if you're keen.
Cheers Lincoln

christine's picture

this conversation for gazza be in the scummy road riding section of nobmob?!!

unicycle6869's picture

No one wheeling for me tonight due to the rain and such. Hopefully be able to catch up with some of you guys another time! I'll keep my eye open for upcoming rides.

christine's picture

fairly sure if you were to post a ride nearly everyone would show up to see you on the one wheel..

no pressure... Smiling
