Red "Muddy" Hill

Went up Red Hill today and thought I'd post to let people know how muddy it was.. well I have to say that it has to be the wettest I have ever seen it.

Not very drivetrain friendly and I had to cut short my usual ride to a slow 10K or so.

On top of the mud ( yes there's heaps of it ) the good old motocross riders have been hard at it in the last couple of weeks and have all but destroyed all the lines I normally take.. the result is that some bits that used to be a technical uphill ride are now "hike a bike" and just that bit more OTB risky on the way down.. it's a real bummer that they cant just take a little bit more care and think a bit more before they completely destroy the lines.

Mud and all it was good to get back out on the bike after sooooo many rain canceled rides of late!

I was up there today too. First time in a while. Yes it was very wet and boggy but how many motox bikes were there? Easily 10 bikes that I saw. If council and rangers are concerned about erosion of trails, what are they doing about this place? Long ago I was boring enough to own a moto and if I ever rode it up there I would get done. Is this not the case any more?
Also how good is that dirt jump area looking!

Red Hill is private property apparently so has nothing to do with rangers or council. or something like that. i haven't ridden there in ages. i miss it.

Why do I get the feeling that the only people that like mtb riding in NSW are the riders. It does sound dumb but after all that has been happening lately, with mostly all the accessible paths for mtb riding either restricted or being taken away. And now dirt riders f***ing it up for everyone else, it makes me bloody sick.
They are jus burning their bridges with the mtb community as most of us do not ride after raining so why do these guys have to.
Red Hill is going to be ruined like Oxford Falls and look at what happened there. ARRRRGGGG!!!!

I could be wrong but I don't think red hill is private property. I think it is vacant crown land.

Interestingly a little birdy has told me Dep Lands are looking at ways of providing more recreational opportunities and are very interested in cycling.
Something to do with the 2020 sport and rec targets.

Was at Red hill this arvo for the first time. Was great fun!

Can't wait to get back up there again. Smiling

The motorbikes up there generally (not all of them) would have been very irritating to the local residents that live opposite where the start point is. There were a couple of blokes there (looked like younger guys) that were flying up and down the road at full noise. Alot of the guys, shut the bikes down and rolled to thier car which I thought was very thoughtful.

I think quite a few of those residents have kids who ride moto-x themselves. I often see bikes parked outside those places.

is part crown land and part church land.

I would have thought that since Manly Dam was closed as it was too wet and everyone knows that Red Hill drains worse than there that you would have the sensibility not to ride at Red Hill. I was up there on the weekend (without my bike) and there are clear clay ruts caused by bike riders and NOT the motocross boys...use some common sense hey and take some responsibility for the trails we have

I see you've edited your post Christine...

I'm glad you did, I just hope it was self motivated, rather than you being asked to do it. But I thank you for editing it and taking a kinder attitude towards new members.

I just sent you a PM, but it was based on your un-edited post.

kind regards

Precious much mate?

i didn't edit my original post, it was removed and i stand by what I said. It was not a personal attack on you but rather the fact that anyone who was riding up there was being selfish due to the state of the trails.
I have replied to your pm and as the 'elite social rider' (other than Lozza) I am generally nice to newbies... I hope! lol

While I would tend to agree with the irresponsible label for ridding up there after the rain, after seeing first hand "in the making of" the damage caused by moto-x bikes... what I was looking at was clearly not caused by MTB.

Please label me impatient and stupid for bothering to ride there, I did actually wait what I thought was a reasonable amount of time for it to dry out.

The point of my original post was to draw attention to how wet it still was and to express my disappointment with the damage that was clearly, needlessly, being caused by the moto-x guys as they nailed it getting up some of the clay sections of some single track that used to be fun for all ( walkers, MTB, moto-x, unicyclists, wallabies.... )

If I was to take your line of attack further, we are all guilty of being selfish by our association to this MTB activity in the first place.. so lets all ban MTB on anything other than dry firetrails?

So a question for you Christine; if you went up there ( without your bike ) perhaps you could have posted about how wet it was and what damage you saw to draw attention to the fact that we should not be riding there just yet?

Anyone who rode Red Hill lately expecting it to be anything other than a bog hole is an idiot.

Not nescessarily selfish, but most definately stupid.

Do you really need someone else to point out that Red Hill might be muddy atm?

If however you assess for yourself that it's probably going to be muddy, but you don't care and will ride it anyway, well yes, that is quite a selfish approach.

At least you're paying for it with your drive train.

Just letting you know that it's cold today.

Dude, I'm new to the NB.

First time out i rode the wrong way around Manly Dam, nobody said anything, i just got looked at funny.
Over the next few rides I questioned several guys that were riding about where, when etc and nobody said anything about watch out for riding illegal trails and trails being wet etc.

In fact i bought a trail book describing many trails which are now (as i discovered out riding )closed. I know from comn sense and a MTB background that riding trails when it's wet is silly and causes damage. but being new to a different type of geology/climate/etc, how am i supposed to know how long drainage normally takes at places like MD & RHill?

Coxey from BA pointed me to this awesome site, and a few others, and really do rely on the advice of the locals as to where, when, right, wrong etc..Calling people idiots is a bit harsh, especially if you are new to the sport, or the area.

I still have not ridden most of what Sydney has to offer, partly because i do not know if it's ok to ride there. terry Hills for eg, havent ridden there yet so i rode there last weekend on the scummer to check out what i could of the condition, but saw several guys riding onto the trail..do i then assume it's ok ?

all i can say to you lot is... JUST because you are new to nobmob amazingly does not mean that all our or my comments are directed at you singly.. that goes for all noobies!
If you were to look on our site you would easily be able to find threads from the past that would suggest where is good and not good to ride in the rain.
As lots of people like to say.. common sense is just not common.
If you don't know about trail then just ask...generally everyone (who has been here for a while) is helpful and friendly.

nrthrnben's picture

You are so right, calling people idiots and the like is very harsh, kindly pointing them to the correct way comes across allot nicer, and gets the desired result much faster.

More and more people post nasty matter of fact comments about what they believe is common knowledge just to get some kind of "net cred" from there forum or riding peers.

If we see someone on the trail going the wrong way we should all kindly stop them and say, hey mate, did you know this trail is so much more fun the other way, dont just look them up and down.

In some parts of the world the riding scene is so enjoyable as there is very little attitude especially on the trails, we have to be careful this site does not become known as the knobmob.

See you at the dam(clockwise) Smiling

OzMoT's picture

Thanks buddy....

How silly of me and all the noobies not to research the web for several weeks, including reading 10000's of threads to find one that said hey BTW MD normally takes about a week to dry out after a soak...or the one that said thanks for buying the trail book, but sadly they are all now illegal.

common sense indeed...next time gadget
