rent a bike

I've got a friend or two who know how to ride a bike, but interested in getting into MTB...though not sure whether to fork out the money a bike yet. Are there places where you can rent decent mountain bike in Sydney?

Digital camera's suitable for off-roading

Tired of being unable to record my ignominy and new to the world of megapixel envy I'm after hints/tips/experiences from those wiser. I have a habit of bashing stuff up pretty quickly (mobile phones my speciality) and getting dusty and grimey for fun so are there any reasonbly hardy cameras out there that are reliable and half decent quality for not too much money?

Ta,
Matt.

And if anybody just happens to be heading orient ward...

Wrist Guards, and the Most Common Mountain Bike Injuries

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Wrist guards: I have tried quite a few different wrist guards on my bike: skating, snowboarding, and even expensive mountain-bike specific ones made by 661. I finally settled with some wristguards made by Rollerblade, (already on my second set): http://www.ssb5.net/users/20068/picture_959_1167...

They are very sturdy, and have saved me from a broken wrist I am sure. They are very uncomfortable for the first week or so (sore palm), but after that you don't notice them, now I do +50km of all-mountain riding with them, including technical stuff, no problems. I wear them with gloves that don't have padding on the palm of the hand.

Pad recommendations

OK so after gushing a bit on Sunday I'm considering taking the plunge into uncomfortable silly looking arm pads. My (ideal...) criteria are:

- Must cover from (full) elbow to at least half way to the wrist with something fairly solid
- Upper arm coverage would be preferable but not a deal breaker
- Must stay in place! Especially under duress
- Not too hot or motion restrictive
- No annoying itchy velcro bits on the straps when they're put onto bare arms

So does anybody currently use something that fits the bill? Any good/bad experience with brands? Any bike stores worth noting as having a good stock of reasonably priced quality stuff?

Hi all! New to the site, kinda new to off road riding as well...

A little background...in July I had an operation in my right shoulder for a partially torn bicep tendon and screwed up shoulder in general (bicep tenodesis and arthroscopic acromioplasty - I play a lot of volleyball). Not really expecting "full recovery" till mid January but I've been feeling good with playing sports again for couple of weeks now and went for a ride with a friend near ANSTO (Lucas Heights/Menai)

900m into the ride I flip coming off a boulder and of all places land on my right shoulder.

Credit where due

The last few times I've stepped into a cycle store can't say have been that impressed.

However, credit where it's due... picked up the Jekyll from Bike Addiction yesterday - the rear shock is looking shiny and new (it had the seals changed) and the lockout is fixed. This is nice, because when this was shown to a lesser outfit they were like, "Que? Lockout? Can't fix that". Most other places in Sydney will also tell you to send the shock back to Dirtworks which is a little silly.

So nicely done.

selling anyone?

Hello!
I have a couple of friends who want to start riding and asked me if anyone had any second hand bikes they may want to sell...so! does anyone have a second bike of theirs they want to sell?
It seems to me that everyone hoards their old bikes...!
I don't think they want to spend loads - especially since they currently don't ride so may not like it...
If anyone posts I will pass on the information but then I am out of it!
Thank you!

When to replace tyres?

I have a feeling I replace my tyres a little too quickly sometimes, anybody got any good rules of thumb as to when to replace?

I've tubeless UST Maxxis Ignitors and there's still maybe a couple of mm left on rear centre knobs and I'm umming and aahing about whether or not to replace.

I guess the easy answer is suck it and see if the grip's still OK but let me know if you know better!

Ta.
