Bar Mounted Lights
Hi All
I am loking for opinions on the best BUDGET option for a Bar mounted light to be used at The Scott 24 at Stromlo . I have a great helmet light , Cygolite Triden X which is great for sniggle but not quite good enough for fast fireroad ....or dodgey eyes . I am not looking to flash fry native animals , would be a great bonus but not necessary, but be able to do double night laps without going cross eyed . Battery life , cost , brightness , charge time and availability are all improtant ,1700 lumens aint ...
Thanks
Wayne

I have a few lights from DX and the P7 is the one I use for my commute. It's awesomely bright and good value at around $60 with a charger. The batteries are cheap enough to swap between laps, on full power you would get over an hour from one so make your laps less than that eh? The P7 is really wide spread, good in combo with a head mounted set up. They claim to output something like 900 lumens! Even if it's 600 lumens it's a good deal I reckon.
Just a few questions to start off with...
Ok the budget is probably around $ 300 ish
The lights will be used on a regular basis , at the very least two nights on my monthly country runs for work , Stromlo , sparrow etc and say one night ride per fortnight while at home
Double lights not really a must just need Helmet , which i have and is a tripple , and bar as reccomended for my needs
And prefer a rechargable battery with at least 2.5 hours life in it , the kids will steal AA's for silly things like the TV remote or other unnessesary devices
Alot of people on here use Ay Ups. Has every thing you needs.

Whisper has one and it's pretty impressive. Steve01 also has lights by these guys (although different model) and they seem to do the job well.
Or, of course... you could just build yourself one
On the subject of lights, this looked like it _may_ be useful for about $70:

Is it OK, or a bit of a dud?
Cateye? No thank you!
that's what I needed to know. Thanks.
And if i do build one it will probably need a car battery due to my ineptitude with electronics
I've got one of these recently, and at $340ish it is better (brighter) than the 2 sets of ayups I run on my bars.
I've been using the ayups for ages, even had the luxeons for a while, and the addition of the Pygmy has enabled me to really enjoy night riding/racing.
You could also ask for a slightly longer cable, so it gives you more options with the battery mounting (say 5cm longer than standard). Also, the standard mount for the pygmy is a bit high as it's set up to give plenty of adjustment for helmet mounting, and I'd recommend getting the 'low profile' mount.
One of the great things about the HID technology lights is they are upgradable. I've got the 600 lumen version, but I will be able to upgrade to 700 soon for somewhere round $40 + postage.
Daniel (from HID Technology) has a 1000 lumen pygmy in development and that is going to be an awesome package.
fyi: I have a narrow and intermediate set of cree ayups, and the pygmy has a longer wider throw.
