Mixing up !!
Just wondering if I can change my cable brakes to Hydro do I need to stay with the same brand of stuff or can I mix it up
I am running shimano atm can I put sram shifters on the bike with say hayes brakes and keep the shimano discs . I'm running the standard combo
shifter brake combo atm. If all goes well will purchase the Hayes brakes off a fellow mobber if they are still available juust need to find a set of shifters for a 8 speed see how things pan out

You'll be throwing everything away (well - into your spares box) apart from the rotors (discs connected to the wheel) so it really shouldn't matter. Well - AFAIK Avid BB cable brakes use the same pads as their Juicy range but that's only a tiny part of the whole setup.
You mention shifters - just make sure they will physically fit on your bars with the brakes you're thinking of in a way you like but aside from that shouldn't be an issue.
Yes, *with care* you can mix brakesets and discs in the 160mm range. You may need to pack out calipers a little on the adapters to ensure that the pads only run on the brake track and not on the rotor spokes, plus you need to make sure the pad width is matched to the brake track width. Get either of these wrong and you'll get odd pad and disc wear, and you can even inadvertently wear through your disc spokes.
From experience, this can be an issue with Hayes Nines.
Packing out calipers to match the brake track is requires more care in the 7" disc range as some are 180mm and others 185mm diameter.
What model Hayes are you looking at getting?
