sold out in the first day! last year I had days to ponder 100 or 50.. 100 or 50... 50 or 100?
shows just how popular MTB has become, and another example to add to the "we need more MTB trials" arguments out there.

Any good training advice or such like?

I am going to start riding more often on the weekends and know I need to build the distance up as well. Is it work commutting in the week to get the miles underneath me?

I have a fairly decent level of fitness, doing 2 1 hour long personal training sessions a week which concentrate on Cardio, have done some oceanswims in the past and am doing the Mud run this weekend. I ran the JP Morgan challenge in 26.45 which granted is only 5.6km but still not a bad time.

I asked Hamo the exact same question when I was doing my first DW last year. He was then the current Dirtworks Champion and record holder. His advice was "ride everywhere in the Big Dog". And that is what I did and I ended up completing in 6h35m. Smashing my 7hr goal.

I commute daily from Manly Vale to Ultimo 35km/day or 175km/week
I ride every weekend usually a minimum 60km
I also try and ride a full 100km every 4 weeks Oaks>Ingar>Andos>Oaks, Great North Road or Northern Beaches Hill Fest all great training rides and a fun day out.

Yes get the kms on your legs. Ride long, ride often and never forget to stretch - Hams, Quads, Calfs, Flexors and your ITB!! I learned the hard way and now am constantly managing muscle injuries Sad

There's no substitute for being on the bike!

There's also no substitute for stretching!

Logan's picture

"ride everywhere in the Big Dog" means what riding everywhere in the big ring?

Am big on the stretching at the moment, have had back surgery earlier this year so yeah.

Logan, cycling is fantastic for strengthening the large muscle groups in your bum and legs and is much better for the body in terms of impact stress. As the strength in your legs increases try throwing some x country running in, especially stairs and hill climbs. Becasue running is less efficient the muscles have to work harder and if you include this in some training it can help to delay the effects of muscle fatigue. Running will also work the smaller muscle groups providing overall leg conditioning. I am not qualified in any health profession but I have done a fair bit of adventure racing and this approach has worked for me pretty well. As Phil says though, stretch, stretch and stretch

Big Dog = Big Ring

very much with the stretching, not everyone takes the whole 'racing' scene quite so seriously!!
Yes, train but have a life as well - goodness me! I trained, kept my normal life, had a total social ball and finished feeling happy and good - which was my intention...
the chances of a podium are very much a speck in the distance so I am not clear on the competitiveness that overcomes everyone at these events (bit like the hot lap story for me I guess...)
Anyway, usually people post 'training rides' and you will get to look forward to day trips out to St Albans and the Oaks up and Down etc. To complete is to win yes?!

philberesford's picture

But to complete AND beat all your mates is even better! You can't put a price on bragging rights Sticking out tongue

Looking forward to the training rides, but yes need to get out more on the bike for sure.

I will be looking to finish first and foremost, but will have a time in mind as well so yeah.

Time to get a road bike I feel and get some mileage in the legs on the way to work etc.

Men and ego again...

Oh Blondie, you are sooooo FoS! There are sooooo many times you've been buzzing at beating some rival boy or other up a hill or round a track or at an event. It's not a boy thing at all! Sticking out tongue

[about men] i was confused, because it sounds like envy ...

Hey Christine, I think Yeti say it perfectly on Page 4 of their new 2010 catalogue

Cool

The Dirtworks is a race so you might expect some chatter about racing and going fast and beating mates and best times and so on as that is what a very big percentage of people who enter it will be doing - RACING.

christine's picture

Lucky I don't own a yeti then!!
Rob, I may be chuffed if I am faster or beat a boy who is full of himself up a hill but that’s on weekend rides - not competitions where I don't care how long it takes me to do 100ks as long as I finish...

(ok, in the 24hr races I like to do laps as close to the same times as the boys but that’s more so that I am not a liability...)

philberesford's picture

and I say you are unlucky that you don't own a Yeti Sad

Riding a Yeti is liking riding a thoroughbred. They need to be ridden fast, nay, they demand to be ridden fast! I swear it's the bike not me.
