Dont tell everyone just yet.

Rob's picture

The course description sounds unchanged, yet they say it's 104km. Hmmmmm....

BT's picture

Tell everyone why don't you?! Now I'll have to sit on my PC hitting Refresh for hours on end again!

Eye-wink

dangersean's picture

@Rob

I'm pretty sure my Garmin came to 104km this year for the race.

Next year's aim for this race is sub 6 hours on a single speed. Can't wait.

philberesford's picture

Yeah after my 06h20 in The Fling on Sunday I'm so going to push for a sub 6 hour in the DW next year for sure!

dangersean's picture

You will do it easy mate.

I did 5h57 at DW on a geared bike this year compared with 6H27 on the SS at the Fling on the weekend.

By that reasoning, you are a shoe in for sub 6.

Just need to secure an entry............

jdb's picture

Pick up an entry off ebay

BT's picture

This will be my 3rd 100K after the Doctor and Fling this year (provided I get an entry!). I've done the DW50, so I know what to expect there.

How does the DW100 compare to the Fling? Is it easier or pretty similar?

philberesford's picture

Just checked out last years results and if I place roughly in the same category spot as I did in the Fling (#63) then I should be good for a 5h45 time. That's almost 50mins quicker than I did the DW100 this year. Plus the climbing is nowhere near as intense in the DW.

IMHO DW is easier than the Fling. Although the 100 does contain all those lovely rock gardens. I won't be riding my light weight race tyres for DW. There's too much fun to be had through the rock gardens and Shepherds-Grin-Fest-Gully. It's what the 575 was made for!

Matt_B's picture

Dangersean i think i snuck in a few mins behind you in the fling on a ss, would you ride a bigger gear in the dirtworks?

RaceLeader's picture

I might even video it ... just for something different.

dangersean's picture

Well for the fling I ran onegear's trusted ratio of 32:19 on my 29er. I got home but did get some wicked cramps.
I usually run 32:18, but like the idea of an extra tooth at events as in the end don't lose much on the flats as I gain on the hills...

Damien's picture

I will be going up a couple on the front for my race bike with a 34 x 19.

I gear my bike for hills and that is where you will kill it on a singlespeed 32 x 19 is a good allround gear ratio (for a 29er) a bit spinny on the flat but great on just about all but the bigest hills but as always with riding a singlespeed you will never be in the right gear.

For someone who has only ever done the Irate intern ( 50 k ) this year , and has limited $ and time , How does it compare to Mogo ? Is it a must do ride ? or just another ride a couple of months after the Bliss of the Mont 24 ??

Thanks

Wayne

Hey Bikeboy

Dirtworks has a very different character to both the Fling and the Angry Doctor and for that reason alone, it's something you should probably try at least once. Then you can decide if you want to do it again next time. It's got some great rocky technical sections but also some fairly dull gravel road..... I'd recommend doing the 100k though, otherwise you miss most of the good stuff.

A big chunk of the course is accessible so if you like, you could go up and try some of it out ( probably Old Great North Road or Womerah Range ) before commiting.

CB

Buck's picture

It is very different to the Mogo. There is no single track on the DW100. It does have techincal rock climbs and descents though.

I found it much easier than the Angry Doctor.

Despite it being mainly firetrail the descents down Shephards Gully and Jack's track still puts a mega smile on your dial Smiling

Damien's picture

Dirtworks has a bridge that must be ridden if your not going to ride the bridge your not allowed to enter.

Wayne its a fun event and worth doing.

Bikeboy's picture

If that is the Canoe bridge , its my only chance to get a pic in a magazine .......................................making a goose of myself ??

Damien's picture

Yes it is and just remember its only water.

Its amazing how many mountainbikers are afraid of a little fall in the water and they call themselves mountainbikers.

Its easy.

ar_junkie's picture

It's when a canoe breaks your fall... that's the part that hurts!

Matt_B's picture

Onegear Dangersean thanks for your feedback. I ran 32 18 at the fling on a 26 inch which was great in the climbs, ran the same for the Doctor, Dirtworks from the profile looks like i could go a bit harder maybe 2:1 so 32 16.
I don't think it matters too much to me, my take on ss is that i am always in the right gear and try not to worry too much just pedal

Damien's picture

There just plastic.

Mind you I almost fell off right at the very end this year it is easy enough but still challenging.

Damien's picture

I have done a back to back test when I had my 26inch SS I ran a 32x17 one week on a regular training ride and then 32x18 the following week both times I pushed hard and put in the same effort. Over a 57km (Oaks up and down) distance the 32x18 was a good 15minutes quicker.

For a while I ran 33x18 on my 29er while it certainly gave the bike a bit of zing and made it feel quicker it also fatigued my legs a lot quicker than the easier 32x19 and was not a good choice when racing any sort of distance event.

I think in the scheme of things the bigger gears 32x17/16 on 26inch wheels and 32x18/17 on 29ers might feel quicker on the flats and downhills and will certainly accelerate quicker. But on a ride of any decent sort of distance with any sort of hills the spinner 32x18 (26er) and 32x19 (29ers) gears are going to give you a quicker time with less fatigue.

Bikeboy's picture

How much does it cost to enter this fun filled ride ? Is it a camp Saturday night social event ? and does is sell out in a short time ?

If i think of any more questions ............

Wayne

Carlgroover's picture

Around $120, yes and no there's so many tickets there's never a rush for them at all Eye-wink

Rob's picture

You can make it as social or not as you like Eye-wink

The weather plays a part. One year it was very cold at night, and only 4 degrees when we woke, but I have some memories of warmer times.

We should certainly go do some social riding on the fun part of the course in the new year Smiling

spudatm's picture

i wouldn' leave it to the last minute to enter. Ive done angry doctor two year in a row 2008 bought my entry about 6 weeks after entries had opened. This year the whole thing sold out in two weeks. Ive done the fling three years in a row the first two year bought entries when I got around to it with no dramas. This year it sold out in 5 hours. These events are getting more and more popular and dirt works is one of the more well known events in nsw so iwouldnt leave your entry attempt to long after dec 1

psd's picture

Booked in for my first 100km ride! Better start training ...

jdb's picture

That entry system was fantastic

Brian's picture

Now lets see if I actually get there as I have sold my last two entries

philberesford's picture

I've got my ticket to ride! Sub 6hrs here I come

Nice to see their entry system didn't collapse under the weight of entries like the Fling entry system

The registrations went very smoothly. Bliss. I ended up entering the 100kms although I thought I wouldn't do another one. I've done 11 so far. But Dirtworks course is more fun I think than any other ones and I've been told many a time that the 50k course is boring. Smiling

BT's picture

Did the 50K this year and this will be my first crack at the 100K. Looking forward to the canoe bridge!

Alysum's picture

That was very quick... Some 50K still available though so hurry! Smiling
