Work has begun on the new Awaba Pump Track. The following pictures are from the start of the first section of the track. Once these have packed in nice and hard, additional more technical lines will be added.

A video to show the flow would be GREAT !!! a lot of people i have spoken to don't realise it's like a perpetual motion machine (kinda) ...

Does a pump track work with a full suspension bike?

Lenny_GTA's picture

The track is even better since some work in the rain. Berms are like concrete and a few harder lines have been added.

You right though.........no pedalling required. It's a pretty good core workout to keep everything flowing nice. I will have to dig up a video (or go film one) to show it being ridden.

I've seen plenty of people ride it fine with full sus bikes. I use a hardtail with 24" wheels and others do well on smaller bikes.

PUMP TRACK
Rode this last weekend on a 26", 5inch travel bike. I didn't drop my seat more than normal or lock out fork. I turned on propedal on RP23. Found the rollers excellent. I starter clockwise, then went anticlockwise which worked better for me. I can't manual through the woops but I picked up enough speed approaching the berms. I kept failing to exit the berm (going both directions) at enough speed. Either I lacked confidence and broke a little in the approach each time, or I just out right was not balsy enough to pull it out the berm fast enough. So, I did a half pedal each time I left the berm. Rode back tot eh car park and another rider was saying the exit on the berm was a bit low for him. I don't know whether the berm should be higher at the (exit) ends, or if I just need to grow a pair and stay off the anchors. Your honestly will be appreciated, thanks! I was guessing that the top edge had just crumbled a bit and that in time the ends would get higher so dumb-arses like me can handle it.

XC TRAIL
And, I'd just like to say thank you to you and your team for the work on the XC trail. Man, now that is now well, tweaked and bedded in, it flows really well. We were going pretty fast compared to how we normally ride. Many times I found myself pushing it faster than normal and occasionally thinking, "wow" if I come off here I'm going to take out some of these small trees! Some sections are just unreal, it is so fast!. The new section with the concrete blocks caught me off a bit, rode it twice. I got the feeling that one needs to hold more speed through the right hander at the bottom than I was to get the flow for the following bit. I felt it was a little steep but it's work in progress, and I'm not a DH star. The left and right sections crossing the dips at the bottom is un-f'n-real. Man, that whole trail at Awaba just encourages you to push faster and faster. I love it. I also love how it goes through more jungle/palm terrain a bit like Jurasic Park. I'm a big fan of trails names and signage and endorse more signs for the rider to be able to more easily desribe highlights during the drive back home and over the next 5 beers. Thanks again. Excellent! NExt time I'll do a fresh movie, and get some footage of a gun on the Pump Track. Here is the OLD VIDEO we did when the XC track was pretty short:

My vids tend to work better with music loud, imho.

As you can tell, I'm still stoked from Sundays ride at Awaba!

Glad you enjoyed it. Seeing that many happy people there put a smile on my face and really makes the years of planning worth it. I know the build crew were stoked to see that many people out there having fun.

If you like the jungle, you haven't seen anything yet. Some of the stuff coming up is awesome. We have to go around one section as it is a threatened ecological community, but there is still some quality rainforest to come. The main loop probably still has close to 5km's to be built which will make the loop a pretty decent size.

Already planning the network that will branch off it, but I am sure the build crew will want a break and a few weekends to actually ride. Once the main loop is done we will start developing the technical trails and BIG climbs.

As for the pump track, the berms are fine we just need to tweak the rollers so you can hold speed out of the berms. I ride it on a 24" wheel bike and get through fine with no peddling, but the exits of the berms can (and will) be improved. There is also more lines coming.

@Sammydog - you're onto a real winner at Awaba. I guess driving over an hour will be the price to pay (both ecologically and financially) to get to the nearest substantial mountain bike park in the coming years.

You said you had a lot of vertical and area there to play with... how much exactly? Don't suppose you have any crazy plans to turn the place into something akin to Redwoods in Rotorua? Laughing out loud

Lenny_GTA's picture

The DH trail falls somewhere around 330m vertical. We have a bit more elevation to play with for the XC, its just a matter of finding a way up and then down.

And the money to plan/build it.

Its all coming along though and the next phase, once the current loop is complete, should see a climb of at least 150m vertical. Even from there it will be a pretty good decent. Its pretty steep though so there will be a lot of trail work involved.

There is such a big blank canvas out there though that the possibilities are literally endless. I don't think we have even scratched the surface of whats out there.

We should have a second (club level) DH trail by the middle of this year as well. Something a little tamer than the current trail.
